“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” – Colossians 2:8 (NIV)

INTRODUCTION

Truth and error have battled since the earliest days of the Christian faith. The apostle Paul warned Timothy to counter those who taught strange doctrines in Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3–4). Today, though Christianity has become a major world religion with well-established doctrines, believers still face the task of defending the faith against misconceptions and distortions.

Unfortunately, many people — even some within the Church — have embraced myths about Christianity that hinder them from encountering Jesus as He truly is. These myths often lead to a rejection of the gospel based on half-truths and outright falsehoods, rather than a clear understanding of Christ’s message and its implications.

Below are ten common myths about Christianity that persist in our culture. Each one is paired with Scripture to uncover the truth and encourage clarity in faith and witness.

THE TEN COMMON MYTHS

No. Myth See (Scripture)
1 Jesus Christ was only a great moral teacher Matthew 13:34–35
2 There is no evidence that Jesus rose from the dead Matthew 28:1–10
3 Science is in conflict with Christian faith John 4:48
4 It doesn’t matter what you believe — all religions are basically the same Acts 4:12
5 Christianity is just a crutch for the weak 1 Corinthians 1:26
6 People become Christians through social conditioning 1 Corinthians 15:9–10
7 Christianity stifles personal freedom Galatians 5:1–12
8 Christianity is otherworldly and irrelevant to modern life Hebrews 12:1–2
9 The Bible is unreliable and not to be trusted 2 Peter 1:16
10 All the evil and suffering in the world proves there is no God Revelation 20:1–10

ABANDON THE MYTHS — GO FOR THE TRUTH

  • Go for the truth about God.
There are many things in the world that point to the reality of the God revealed in Scripture — the God who created us, loves us, and chooses to reveal Himself to us. He is not far off or indifferent. He is involved, present, and personal.
  • Go for the truth about Jesus.
Jesus didn’t just claim to know the truth — He claimed to be the truth (John 14:6). Everything in His life, teachings, death, and resurrection validates that claim. Don’t settle for hearsay or cultural assumptions. Take a good, long look at Jesus. He will never disappoint.
  • Go for the truth about yourself.
We are complex creatures. At times, we are generous, kind, and noble. Yet we are also capable of selfishness, pride, and evil. As the Roman poet Ovid observed: “I see the better way and approve it — but I follow the worse.” Similarly, Paul confessed, “The good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice” (Romans 7:19).

This duality explains the human experience: some people dream of utopia, seeing only the good in humanity, while others fear destruction, perceiving only its depravity. Christianity holds both realities in tension. We are like semi-ruined temples — bearing the marks of our original glory, yet desperately in need of restoration.

PILLAR AND GROUND OF TRUTH

The Apostle Paul’s charge is timely:

“These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory.”-
(1 Timothy 3:14–16)

CONCLUSION

Truth matters. In a world full of misinformation, spiritual confusion, and competing voices, Christians are called to be people of truth — grounded in the Word, led by the Spirit, and pointing others to Christ. Don’t let cultural myths cloud the beauty and power of the gospel. Stand on the truth, proclaim it with love, and live it out with courage.
