The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has officially transitioned to a fully cashless payment system for all transactions. It has, therefore, cautioned customers, particularly in the Volta and Oti regions, to avoid dealing with unauthorised individuals claiming to facilitate payments or meter acquisitions.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer, Ms. Eunice Tweneboah-Kodua emphasised that all payments must now be made exclusively through the ECG Power App or by dialing *226#.
She reiterated that ECG do not accept cash payments in any form and warned against falling victim to fraudsters who pose as ECG representatives.
The notice further debunked claims that ECG operates a so-called “coding room” for meter acquisition, labeling such assertions as false.
Additionally, it clarified that the cost of acquiring a meter was not GHS 495, as some fraudsters claim.
To help protect customers from scammers, the notice provided a list of phone numbers linked to unauthorised individuals, who have been fraudulently collecting payments under the guise of ECG officials.
Several additional numbers have also been flagged as fraudulent and customers are urged to avoid engaging with anyone claiming to offer ECG services outside the company’s official channels.
ECG strongly urges all customers to utilize the official digital payment platforms to ensure the safety and security of their transactions, the notice read.
Any suspicious calls, messages, or requests for cash payments should be reported to the nearest ECG office or local authorities for immediate action.
The measures aligned with ECG’s commitment to enhancing customer service, reducing financial fraud, and ensuring transparency in its operations.
