The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) welcomes the appointment of Afetsi Awoonor as its new Managing Director, effective January 20, 2025.
Mr. Awoonor, a seasoned energy sector executive with extensive experience in Sub-Saharan Africa’s oil and gas industry, steps into the role following a handover ceremony at BOST’s Head Office in Accra.
The appointment, made by President John Dramani Mahama, marks a strategic shift for one of West Africa’s key oil infrastructure companies.
In an official statement, officials hailed the handover as a demonstration of “exemplary corporate governance practices.”
Mr. Awoonor, who previously served as Manager of Government Relations at BOST from 2016 to 2017, brings nearly a decade of experience in hydrocarbon trading and business development.
Before rejoining BOST, he was Senior Partner at DOC Africa and Regional Head of Sales and Marketing at Convenio Energy, overseeing operations across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
During the ceremony, Mr. Awoonor expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Managing Director, Dr. Edwin Provencal, for his impactful leadership, which, he noted, had driven the company to new heights.
“I am honoured to carry the torch forward,” he stated, pledging to strengthen BOST and foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
His immediate focus, he added, would be engaging internal stakeholders and nurturing a high-performing work environment.
The transition was met with widespread support. The BOST Senior Staff Union voiced its commitment to supporting Mr. Awoonor, emphasising the President’s dedication to appointing qualified leaders to steer key institutions.
“This appointment is a reflection of President Mahama’s confidence in selecting competent individuals who will advance national objectives,” the union said.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ketu North also congratulated Mr. Awoonor, echoing his exceptional competence and dedication.
They expressed their gratitude to President Mahama for his recognition of loyalty and hard work through the appointment.
Mr. Awoonor’s educational background includes an Executive Master’s in International Oil & Gas Leadership from the Geneva Graduate Institute and a Master’s in Oil and Gas Management from IFP School, both completed in 2015.
He has also demonstrated a commitment to social development through the Afetsi Awoonor Foundation, which focuses on empowering youth and women in local communities through mentorship and entrepreneurship programs.
The appointment has been particularly well-received in the Volta Region, with the Weta Traditional Area Chiefs’ Council expressing pride in Mr. Awoonor’s achievement. The Volta Regional Youth Wing of the NDC also celebrated the news, recognising the President’s confidence in the capabilities of the Ghanaian youth.
As BOST continues to play a crucial role in the nation’s energy security, Mr. Awoonor’s experience in managing key relationships with refineries, oil companies, and distributors is expected to be an asset in his new role.
The company’s leadership change comes at a pivotal time as the efficient management of oil storage and transportation infrastructure remains vital to national and regional energy sector growth.
