A youth-led initiative within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Young Elephants Study Group, has announced plans to conduct an independent investigation into the party’s poor performance in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a press release dated January 11, 2025 and signed by the group’s Spokesperson, Ababio Kumi, the Young Elephants expressed concern over the NPP’s electoral defeat and outlined their commitment to understanding the factors behind it.
While acknowledging the party’s ongoing official assessment of the loss, the group emphasised the importance of diverse perspectives to ensure the NPP’s long-term success.
The group has target five areas where they research will cover;
- Why Generation Z voters rejected the NPP.
- Reasons polling station executives failed to vote.
- The impact of government policies on voter behaviour.
- Underlying causes of low voter turnout.
- Potential breakdowns in the relationship between the government and the party.
According to the group, these areas represent critical questions that need answers to strengthen the party’s foundation and restore public trust.
“While the party has set up a committee to assess the loss, we believe it is critical to have varying perspectives for the greater good of the NPP,” the statement read.
“As representatives of the youth, we seek to understand why the party lost and provide broader insights to help rebuild the NPP stronger and more united.”
The Young Elephants Study Group aims to complement the party’s official findings and foster collaboration across generational and structural divides.
Their report, which is expected to be released in the coming months, will provide actionable recommendations to guide the party’s recovery strategy.
The NPP, which had been in power since 2017, suffered a significant setback in the 2024 elections, losing both the presidency and a considerable number of parliamentary seats.
Analysts have attributed the loss to factors such as voter apathy, dissatisfaction with government policies, and internal party conflicts.
The Young Elephants’ initiative hope to provide meaningful reforms within the party.
