Trump hosts China’s Xi

Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived at the White House for a state visit hosted by President Donald Trump. It’s his first trip to Washington, DC, in over a decade and a landmark meeting that will be closely watched.

It’s their second summit of the year as they try to manage the most consequential bilateral relationship on the world stage. Trump and Xi are convening as concerns over the risks of AI in particular have reached a fever pitch, spurring calls for guardrails to prevent the technology from spiraling out of control. Trump today said on social media that AI “will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is.”

The economic and technological rivals discussed key issues including trade, Taiwan and the war in Iran. However, deep mistrust on both sides will likely hamper any significant breakthroughs, experts said.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Wednesday that the United States and China have extended their trade truce once again, resolving to keep negotiating on key economic issues following a damaging trade war that spiraled out of control last year.

Bessent told Fox News that both sides met for 12 hours on Wednesday and agreed to an extension “to give us more time to see what we can do on the economic front.” He said the meeting was “productive.”
