The Gyasehene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Twumasi Dankwah, has broken ground for the construction of a new police station at Nyamekrom in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The project is expected to provide a major boost to security in Nyamekrom and surrounding communities by giving the Ghana Police Service (GPS) a dedicated facility from which to operate and respond more effectively to crime and other security-related incidents.
The ground-breaking formed part of a sod-cutting and fundraising ceremony held at Nyamekrom, which brought together traditional authorities, the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, residents and other stakeholders.
The initiative is being driven as part of efforts to improve security infrastructure in the area, enhance police visibility and ensure that residents have easier and faster access to law enforcement services.
Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, the New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ransford Owusu Boakye, pledged the Assembly’s support towards the successful completion of the police station.
He said the Assembly would collaborate with the traditional authorities and other stakeholders to provide the necessary support to ensure that the project was completed.
According to the MCE, the provision of appropriate security infrastructure was essential to creating a safe environment for residents, businesses and visitors while supporting the socio-economic development of the municipality.
The commitment from the Assembly is expected to strengthen efforts by the traditional authorities and the community to mobilize the resources required to complete the facility.
The Nyamekrom Hene and Nkosuohene (Development Chief) of the New Juaben Traditional Council, Nana Kwame Nnuro Agyapong II, described the project as a critical intervention for the development and security of the community.
He said the absence of a dedicated police facility had created security challenges for residents and stressed that the establishment of the station would help address some of those concerns.
Nana Agyapong II noted that a permanent police presence in Nyamekrom would help deter criminal activities, improve response times and strengthen collaboration between residents and the police.
He further urged the people of Nyamekrom to support the project, saying the success of the initiative would depend largely on the collective commitment of the community and other stakeholders.
The traditional authorities subsequently appealed to residents, businesses, corporate organisations, philanthropists and development partners to contribute towards the completion of the police station.
They said the facility would serve not only Nyamekrom, but also neighbouring communities, making it an important addition to the area’s development infrastructure.
The construction of the Nyamekrom Police Station is, therefore, being seen as a significant step towards improving law enforcement, promoting peace and creating a safer environment for residents and businesses in the area.
The traditional authorities expressed optimism that with the support of the Municipal Assembly, the community and other stakeholders, the project would be completed and handed over to the Ghana Police Service for operational use.
