The Social Welfare and Community Development Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has presented cash and assorted items to 57 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) within the Metropolis.
The gesture was part of KMA’s efforts to improve the livelihoods of Persons With Disabilities and to ensure that they are included in the Assembly’s development programmes.

The 57 beneficiaries received support to help them in areas such as capacity building, skill training, educational support, health needs, and business development. The items and cash given were intended to enable them to start or expand small businesses, take care of their health, and pursue education and skills that will make them more self-reliant.
The disbursement also addressed other pressing conditions faced by Persons With Disabilities in the Metropolis.
Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, Mayor of Kumasi, congratulated them and urged them to use the support given to them productively.
He announced that the government has increased its allocation to the Disability Fund from 3% to 5%, which shows the government’s commitment to the welfare of Persons with Disabilities.
The mayor encouraged the beneficiaries to invest the cash and items received into income-generating activities that will improve their lives and that of their families. He further assured them that the Assembly will continue to create opportunities for them through training programs and other forms of support.

He renewed KMA’s commitment to continue supporting Persons With Disabilities in the Metropolis and expressed appreciation to the Social Welfare Department, partners, and the PWD Association for working together to make the programme a success.
Mr. Charles Benim, who represented the Chairman of the KMA PWD Association, expressed their gratitude to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the Government of Ghana for the support.
He advised the beneficiaries to keep in constant touch with the Social Welfare Department for monitoring and for any additional assistance that may be needed in the future.
Officials present were Mr. Francis Dwira Darko, the Metro Coordinating Director, Mr. Jones Kani, the Metro Budget Analyst, and Mrs. Esther Nyarko, the Metro Director of Social Welfare and Community Development.
