For Julian Baisie, fashion begins not with fabric, but with an idea.
The Ghanaian creative has spent the past nine years building Urban Cognative, a fashion brand that transforms philosophy, music, culture and everyday experiences into wearable art. As the Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Creative Director, Baisie has positioned the brand as a fusion of fashion, graphic design, illustration and storytelling.
Founded in 2017, Urban Cognative has grown from a personal creative venture into an international apparel brand serving customers across Ghana, South Africa, Liberia, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Dubai and several European countries. The company has also produced apparel for international brands, including U.S.-based Royal Diadem and Effe & Co.
Unlike many designers, Baisie remains directly involved in every stage of production—from developing concepts and creating illustrations to printing graphics onto garments. Working from a modest home studio equipped with a worktable and heat press machine, he continues to demonstrate that successful brands can be built through vision, creativity and consistency rather than expensive infrastructure.
His designs, known for their minimalist aesthetic and conceptual depth, are inspired by personal experiences, observations about society, philosophical reflections and music. Each collection is intentionally created to communicate ideas and spark conversation beyond fashion.
Beyond Urban Cognative, Baisie has contributed to several notable creative projects. He collaborated with Chaste Shoes on its Christ The New Fashion campaign, where he wrote and performed a spoken-word piece and featured in the campaign’s promotional production. He also served as the brand’s International Sales Representative in Canada.
His portfolio also includes rebranding work for Diviniti Wear Ghana and the design of campaign materials for Wear Ghana’s Anigye House launch and Kotoku Collection.
Baisie’s latest project, the Street Smart Collection, reflects Urban Cognative’s belief that creativity should be accessible rather than exclusive. While many fashion brands rely on scarcity to create demand, Urban Cognative seeks to make meaningful design available to a wider audience.
As the brand continues to expand beyond Ghana’s borders, Baisie remains committed to his founding vision: using fashion as a platform to tell stories, celebrate culture and transform ideas into wearable art.
