The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), will on Wednesday unveil a landmark publication celebrating the life and enduring legacy of internationally acclaimed Ghanaian-born artist, El Anatsui, whose groundbreaking works have earned him global recognition as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary artists.

The 411-page book, El Anatsui: The Man, the Myth, the Legend at 80 and Counting, will be launched at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium on the university’s campus. Edited by Associate Professor Greg Mbajiorgu and Chikaogwu Kanu, the volume brings together contributions from more than 100 scholars, artists, cultural practitioners and public intellectuals from Africa, Europe and North America.

The publication chronicles the artistic journey of El Anatsui, who spent 47 years teaching and creating at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he transformed discarded materials into internationally celebrated artworks now displayed in some of the world’s leading museums, galleries and cultural institutions.

Organisers say the publication goes beyond celebrating the artist’s personal achievements to document the intellectual history of the university, the evolution of the renowned Nsukka School of Art and Africa’s growing influence on the global contemporary art scene.

The unveiling is expected to attract leading figures from academia, government, traditional institutions, the arts and the media.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, will serve as Chief Host, while the President of the University Senior Staff Club, Chukwudi Nnamchi, will host the ceremony. The event will be chaired by Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe.

A review of the book will be presented by renowned linguist and literary scholar Chris Uchenna Agbedo, who is expected to examine the publication’s significance as a cultural archive and historical record.
Among the dignitaries expected to attend are Chidi Obeta, Peter Umeadi, Obi Asika and several traditional rulers and cultural leaders.

According to the organisers, the publication captures not only El Anatsui’s achievements as a globally acclaimed artist but also his influence as a teacher, mentor, philanthropist and institution builder whose work has elevated Nsukka into a destination for artists, scholars and researchers from around the world.

The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
