Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for the Karaga Constituency, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has endorsed Mr. Awentami Paul Afoko’s bid for the National Chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing him as the experienced leader capable of repositioning the party and leading it back to power.
Dr. Amin Adam announced his endorsement when a delegation of NPP leaders and national executive aspirants paid a courtesy call on him at his private residence.
According to the former Finance Minister, the NPP, now in opposition, requires competent and experienced leadership to rebuild its structures and prepare for future electoral victory.
“I support Paul Afoko for National Chairman,” he declared, stressing that leadership choices within the party should be based on competence rather than popularity.
“We know the serious people who can bring us back to power. We do not follow the masses to choose someone to support; we support those we believe have the potential to win and lead the party,” he stated.
Dr. Amin Adam said that although his loyalty to the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remains unquestionable, he believes Mr. Afoko possesses the leadership qualities needed to help the NPP regain power.
He explained that his confidence in Mr. Afoko stems from their previous working relationship and his first-hand knowledge of the former National Chairman’s leadership and organisational abilities.
“I have worked with Paul Afoko and I know he is competent. He can also help raise funds for the party because we need money as a party in opposition,” he said.
Mr. Afoko has, in recent months, embarked on a nationwide campaign anchored on what he describes as the 3Rs Agenda – Reunite, Rebuild and Return the NPP to power.
As part of the agenda, he has pledged to heal divisions that emerged within the party, following the 2024 general election, reconcile aggrieved members and encourage those who have become inactive or sidelined to return to the party.
The former National Chairman has also promised to strengthen the party’s grassroots by empowering polling station executives, constituency executives and the rank-and-file.
His campaign has highlighted improved welfare, better logistics and greater involvement of grassroots officials in party decision-making as key priorities.
Mr. Afoko maintains that restoring unity, rebuilding the party’s organisational structures and empowering the grassroots are essential to the NPP’s efforts to reclaim power in the next general election.
