The KGL Foundation has commissioned a newly renovated Out-Patient Department (OPD) at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, a move aimed at improving mental healthcare delivery and enhancing the experience of patients seeking treatment.

The project, which involved a comprehensive refurbishment of the facility, has transformed the OPD into a modern and patient-friendly space. The upgraded facility features improved safety measures, refurbished consulting rooms and a more welcoming environment designed to support the recovery and well-being of patients.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the KGL Foundation, Mr Elliot Dadey, underscored the importance of a conducive healthcare environment in promoting positive treatment outcomes.

“The physical environment of a health facility plays a crucial role in the recovery process of patients,” he stated.

Mr Dadey explained that the renovation forms part of the Foundation’s commitment to supporting healthcare delivery and encouraging greater investment in mental health services across the country.

According to him, the upgraded facility will provide a more comfortable and dignified atmosphere for patients while improving the working conditions of healthcare professionals.

Receiving the renovated facility on behalf of the hospital, the Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, commended the KGL Foundation for fulfilling its pledge and contributing to the transformation of mental healthcare infrastructure.

He noted that the renovation has significantly improved the appearance and functionality of the facility, creating a safer and more comfortable environment for both patients and staff.

“The renovated facility has improved the hospital’s image, enhanced safety and comfort within consulting rooms, and made the institution more welcoming to patients and visitors,” Dr Obeng said.

He further observed that the facelift could help challenge negative perceptions surrounding mental health institutions and encourage more people to seek professional care when necessary.

“The facelift is helping to change public perceptions of mental healthcare and encouraging more people to seek professional support when needed,” he added.

The commissioning ceremony attracted several key stakeholders in the health sector, highlighting the significance of the initiative.

Among those present were the Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, Dr Eugene Dordoye; Clinical Coordinator, Dr Susan Seffah; Head of Public Relations and Deputy Clinical Coordinator, Dr Peggy Asiedu Ekremet; Director of Administration at the Mental Health Authority, Mr Victus Kpesese and the Deputy Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Mr Emmanuel Hanson Torde.

Officials expressed optimism that the improved facility would enhance patient care, reduce anxiety among visitors and serve as a model for future investments in mental health infrastructure across the country.
