The Centre for National Culture (CNC), Greater Accra, has commenced its annual Student Drama Festival in Accra, bringing together senior high schools from across the region to showcase their theatrical talents.

The week-long festival is designed to identify and select the best drama club to represent the Greater Accra Region at the national level.

Participating schools are staging Verdict of the Cobra, a celebrated play by renowned Ghanaian playwright Dr. Mohammed Ben Abdallah.

The production forms the centerpiece of this year’s competition and provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their acting, directing, and interpretive skills.

The play tells the story of a marital dispute involving twins who both claim the same woman as their wife. When members of the community fail to resolve the conflict, the matter is taken before the gods.

Through their spokesperson, the Cobra, the gods ultimately empower the woman to deliver the final verdict and choose her rightful husband. Rich in symbolism, the play serves as a socio-political allegory that explores themes of leadership, justice, authority, and collective decision-making.

Speaking to 3Entertainment’s Naphtali Baah at the opening of the festival, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the Centre for National Culture, Eric Ohene-Larbi, said the event serves as an important platform for nurturing young talents and preparing them for professional careers in the performing and creative arts industries.

According to him, the festival provides students with a creative and developmental environment where they can cultivate skills in playwriting, public speaking, acting, directing, and other areas within the creative arts sector.

Mr. Ohene-Larbi further emphasized that the initiative plays a vital role in developing the next generation of performing arts practitioners while promoting creativity, confidence, discipline, and artistic excellence among students.

The festival is expected to foster healthy competition among participating schools and contribute to the growth and preservation of Ghana’s rich theatrical and cultural heritage.
