The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as fake a widely circulated notice claiming that the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia had ordered African nationals, including Ghanaians, to leave the country by May 31, 2026 or face arrest, imprisonment and financial sanctions.

In a statement issued in Accra yesterday, the Ministry said it had become aware of a fabricated circular circulating on both social and traditional media platforms, purportedly issued by Cambodian immigration authorities.

According to the fake notice, citizens from Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and several other African countries were allegedly being targeted under new immigration enforcement measures in Cambodia.

However, the Ministry clarified that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it had been confirmed that the document was fraudulent and had not been issued by any official institution in Cambodia.

“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia,” the statement stressed.

The Ministry further disclosed that the General Department of Immigration under Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior had also issued an official press clarification categorically describing the purported notice as “completely untrue.”

Government urged the Ghanaian public and media houses to disregard the discredited document and avoid circulating unverified information capable of causing fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families.

Despite dismissing the deportation claims, the Ministry acknowledged that some Ghanaian nationals resident in Cambodia had, prior to the emergence of the fake notice, expressed interest in voluntarily returning home.

According to the statement, the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, had already facilitated the evacuation of eighty-five Ghanaian nationals between March and May this year.

The Ministry added that arrangements were currently underway to facilitate the return of an additional seventy-six Ghanaians who have also expressed willingness to return home.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working in conjunction with competent authorities in Cambodia to ensure the safe return of these Ghanaians. We commend the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for their impressive cooperation,” the statement noted.

Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and interests of Ghanaian nationals abroad and advised the public to rely solely on official sources for information concerning Ghanaians living overseas.
