The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of 27-year-old car dealer, Theophilus Ashitey Ama, whose burnt body was discovered inside a vehicle near the Adenta Fuel Link area on the Legon Bypass in April this year.

Briefing the media in Accra, CID Director-General Lydia Yaako Donkor disclosed that the suspect, identified as Omtete, was apprehended in the Republic of Togo on April 30, 2026 through an Interpol-assisted operation.

According to police investigations, the suspect was a close friend and neighbour of the deceased.

COP Donkor explained that the suspect allegedly lured the victim to his residence on April 6 under the pretext of negotiating the sale of a vehicle.

“Investigations established that the suspect attacked the deceased and inflicted fatal head injuries on him before later transporting the body to the Legon Bypass area,” she stated.

Police say the suspect subsequently sold the deceased’s Hyundai Elantra saloon car for GH¢170,000 and received an initial payment of GH¢80,000.

The CID boss further revealed that the suspect allegedly removed the vehicle’s number plates before setting both the vehicle and the victim’s body ablaze in an attempt to destroy evidence.

However, investigators were able to track him through CCTV footage captured at the crime scene.

The suspect was eventually arrested in Togo while allegedly attempting to sell the deceased’s mobile phone. He was later handed over to Ghanaian authorities at the Aflao border for further investigations.

COP Donkor disclosed that the suspect has already been arraigned before court and remanded into police custody.

She added that due to the severe burns sustained by the deceased, investigators could not rely solely on visual identification.

“DNA samples have therefore been taken from the deceased’s mother for forensic analysis to conclusively establish identity,” she said.

Meanwhile, another individual whose vehicle was allegedly used to transport the body has been granted police enquiry bail and is assisting investigators.

The CID says investigations into the murder remain ongoing as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
