Police have arrested 89 individuals across the country, in connection with post-election violence, including acts of vandalism, looting and destruction of property.
This was disclosed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Akrofi, Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate (PAD), during a media briefing on post-election security measures today.
According to ACP Akrofi, 40 of the suspects are directly linked to incidents of vandalism and looting.
“All these suspects are in custody and will be taken through due process under the law,” she assured.
The police used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to the public, urging individuals to refrain from engaging in acts of violence.
“Perpetrators of such acts will be identified, arrested, and brought to face justice,” ACP Akrofi emphasised.
Post-Election Security Measures
To maintain peace and order in the aftermath of the elections, the police have transitioned into a post-election security phase, by implementing a series of measures;
- Increased Patrols: Security agencies have enhanced visibility by conducting patrols in various locations.
- Intelligence-Led Operations: Targeted operations are underway within communities to identify and apprehend perpetrators.
- Static Security: Police are providing fixed security at key state facilities.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Authorities are in active dialogue with government officials and other stakeholders to address their concerns.
Additionally, a special investigative team is analysing video footage to identify individuals involved in vandalism, looting, and destruction of property.
ACP Akrofi vowed that everyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted.
The police thanked Ghanaians for their cooperation throughout the electoral process and urged calm in the face of post-election tensions.
“Your safety, security and the protection of your property remain our top priority,” ACP Akrofi assured and added that the police remain committed to ensuring that Ghana remains peaceful and united.
