Mr. Samuel Payne, Mayor of Kumasi, has stated that about 70% of the total revenue collected by the Assembly goes into waste management.
According to him, the daily revenues collected by the Assembly is the backbone of the developmental infrastructure to improve the socio-economic development of the residents, and if most of the revenue is being consumed by only waste management, then it is a cause for worry.
The Mayor, who disclosed this at a community engagement forum at Atasemanso in the Nhyiaeso Sub-Metro in Kumasi, to sensitise the residents on the responsibilities of the Assembly’s departments to enable them have fair information about the various departments, when there is the need to ask for their services, entreated residents to desist from littering on the streets.
He noted that it is the same revenue the Assembly uses for infrastructure development like classroom blocks, ultramodern toilet facilities for the public and schools, drilling of boreholes and the provision of streetlights to avert the threat of criminal activities.
The residents were sensitised on how to apply for a permit, types of legitimate marriage, transport and environmental protection.
He reminded the public that burning rubbish is against the KMA by-laws, as it pollutes the air we breathe and stressed that one cannot mount a billboard without a permit from the Assembly.
He also reminded the public, especially Landlords, that reservations in front of their houses are not their property, but belongs to the government and the Assembly and, therefore, have no right to rent it to any individual for private development.
