The Homowo clean-up exercise on Saturday, July 13, 2024 extended its reach to Rawlings Park, Makola, CMB and the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra, leaving a trail of spotless streets and surroundings in its wake.
The initiative, led by the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has garnered immense support from government ministries, residents, stakeholders and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
Security and compliance were ensured by personnel from the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces, who were present throughout the operation on Saturday.
The clean-up exercise entered its second phase, targeting key areas in Accra’s central business district, with Zoomlion providing the necessary resources including garbage trucks, personnel, and equipment.
The team, comprising senior officials from the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), Asafoatsemei, Asafoanyemei and Environmental Health Officers, worked tirelessly to ensure a thorough clean-up exercise.
Also in attendance were; Mrs. Florence Larbi, Chief Operating Officer for the Environment and Sanitation Cluster of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) and Madam Sophia Kudjordi, Chief Corporate Communication Officer of JGC.
Both actively participated in the initiative, demonstrating their company’s commitment to a cleaner and healthier Accra.
They cleared trash, swept streets and removed debris, transforming the streets into clean and safe spaces.
Ga Mantse Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who took part in the exercise expressed his delight at the transformation, stating “It’s a privilege to walk on these streets and know that they are safe again and they are clean.”
He emphasised the importance of residents’ participation in maintaining a clean and healthy city, urging everyone to play their part in keeping Accra clean.
The exercise is part of the Homowo festival celebrations, aimed at restoring Accra’s glory and promoting a culture of cleanliness.
The initiative has received widespread praise, with many calling for its continuation beyond the festival period.
The Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs of Zoomlion, Madam Emma Adwoa Appiaa Osei-Duah, encouraged the traders, hawkers and shop owners to take active part in the exercise for their own safety.
According to her, unsanitary conditions bring about diseases that can affect them and people who patronise their goods and services.
She urged the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce the sanitation by-laws to ensure cleanliness in Accra.
The success of the exercise was a testament to the power of community spirit and collective action, inspiring a cleaner and healthier Accra for all.
