Maguire scores late winner as United claim first Anfield victory since 2016

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire stunned Liverpool as his 84th-minute header clinched Manchester United’s first win at Anfield since 2016 and condemned the hosts to a fourth consecutive defeat.

Maguire guided in Bruno Fernandes’s cross just six minutes after Cody Gakpo had cancelled out a controversial opening goal from Bryan Mbeumo only 61 seconds into a thrilling game. Mbeumo beat Giorgi Mamardashvili from Amad Diallo’s pass to leave Anfield shellshocked, but Liverpool were furious play wasn’t stopped for a head injury to Alexis Mac Allister, who went down in the build-up after colliding with Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool tried to rally again in the closing stages but Gakpo missed a glorious opportunity, heading wide from Jeremie Frimpong’s cross when it looked easier to score, leaving them to face up to a fourth consecutive loss for the first time since 2014, having also been beaten by Chelsea, Galatasaray and Crystal Palace.

A momentous victory for Manchester United means they have won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time under Ruben Amorim. It puts them only two points behind Liverpool in the table, with the champions four points off leaders Arsenal in third.

All Blacks beat Holy Stars

Swedru All Blacks snapped their three-game losing streak in style with a commanding 2-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars in their Week 6 Premier League match at the Swedru Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Benjamin Adjei opened the scoring in the 6th minute, calmly slotting home after a swift attacking move that sliced through the Holy Stars’ defence.

All Blacks maintained their momentum after the break and doubled their lead in the 49th minute, as Hafiz Alhassan reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area to make it 2-0 and effectively seal the points.

The home side dominated proceedings, enjoying 59% possession and creating several chances — registering 13 total shots, with six on target. Holy Stars struggled to find rhythm throughout, managing just four shots, only one of which forced a save from the goalkeeper.

Despite a late push, the visitors, who were reduced to ten men, could not recover as the Black and White secured a deserved and much-needed win in front of their fans.

The result lifts Swedru All Blacks out of their recent slump and provides a confidence boost ahead of their next tough fixture away to Medeama SC. Basake Holy Stars, meanwhile, will aim to regroup quickly when they travel to face Heart of Lions in their upcoming match.

Hearts vs Berekum Chelsea

Matchday Six of the Premier League produced renewed momentum for some of the league’s powerhouses, with Hearts of Oak keeping pace at the top.

Hearts of Oak returned to winning ways with a commanding 2-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park, ending a two-game winless run and maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.

The Phobians, who came into the fixture unbeaten in their last nine meetings with Chelsea, extended that impressive record with a disciplined and efficient performance.

After a tightly contested first half, Hearts found the breakthrough in the 62nd minute when a dangerous corner caused confusion in the Chelsea box. Hamza Issah reacted quickest, steering the ball home with precision to give the visitors a deserved lead.

In stoppage time, Mawuli Wayo put the result beyond doubt, calmly slotting home a rebound after a header had struck the post in the 92nd minute.

The win lifts Hearts of Oak to third place on the league table with three wins and three draws, just one point behind the leaders. For Berekum Chelsea, the defeat halts their brief revival following a win and a draw in their previous two outings.

Coach Didi Dramani will be delighted with the display, especially as it marks the first time this season his side has scored twice in a single match. Hearts will return to Accra to face Bibiani Gold Stars, while Chelsea have an outstanding midweek fixture against the same opponent before visiting Young Apostles.

Wydad edge Kotoko in Accra to take first-leg advantage

Asante Kotoko vs Wydad

Asante Kotoko suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup tie on Sunday.

A second-half strike from Joseph Bakasu handed the visitors a crucial advantage at the Accra Sports Stadium ahead of the return fixture in Morocco.

Coach Karim Zito opted for a 4-2-3-1 system, with Inusah and Peter Amidu Acquah supporting Albert Amoah in attack.

The Porcupines started the game brightly, dictating the tempo with a patient build-up approach and maintaining long spells of possession.

Albert Amoah had the first real chance of the game but failed to connect from a Samba Oniel flick inside the box. Wydad responded swiftly, but defender Oniel was alert to clear the danger.

Kotoko came close again in the 31st minute when Amidu Acquah’s strike went narrowly wide.

The visitors also threatened through Lorch, only for goalkeeper Mohammed Camara to pull off an important save. The Guinean shot-stopper was called into action moments later to deny Aziz Ki from close range as both sides went into the break level.

Wydad broke the deadlock just a minute after the restart when Bakasu met a Lorch cross to silence the home fans.

The situation deteriorated for Kotoko after Camara was sent off for pushing the referee, leaving the hosts with only ten men.

Coach Zito reacted by introducing Aziz Dari and Emmanuel Antwi for Peter Amidu Acquah and Walid Neymar in a tactical reshuffle. Kotoko nearly found the equalizer from a free kick in the 65th minute, but Antwi’s effort sailed over the bar.

Wydad pressed for a second, forcing Dari into crucial saves to keep Kotoko in the game. Substitute Donzo Morifing thought he had equalized late on, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Kotoko had a late scare when Lord Amoah cleared a goal-bound header off the line in the 85th minute, preventing a second goal for the visitors.

Despite Wydad’s dominance in the closing stages, the game ended 1-0 in favor of the Moroccans.

The return leg will be played in Casablanca next week, with a place in the group stage still up for grabs.

GHANA’S ELECTRICITY TARIFFS ARE ANTI-BUSINESS AND ENCOURAGE THEFT

0
Rev. John Awuni the President of the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana FABAG

The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG), in partnership with the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, has expressed deep outrage over the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) persistent nationwide stakeholder engagements aimed at increasing electricity tariffs next year.

According to the associations, the skyrocketing cost of electricity in Ghana is not only unsustainable but also anti-business, anti-growth, and fundamentally flawed. They argue that Ghanaian enterprises and citizens are being strangled daily by tariffs that defy economic logic, crush competitiveness, and create fertile ground for power theft.

FABAG stated that in a country seeking to attract investment and stimulate industrial development, the current electricity pricing regime amounts to a direct attack on manufacturing and productivity. Businesses, especially small and medium enterprises and manufacturers, are being forced to scale down operations, lay off workers, or pass unbearable costs to already overburdened consumers, even as government officials continue to repeat promises of economic transformation.

The statement stressed that Ghana’s electricity pricing system punishes honesty and rewards inefficiency. It explained that ordinary Ghanaians and legitimate businesses are paying for the power sector’s losses, mismanagement, and corruption, which has pushed many to the brink of collapse while others are driven to bypass the system entirely. “When electricity becomes unaffordable, it becomes a target for illegal access. We are fast creating a society where honest business owners are punished while defaulters and illegal users thrive,” FABAG warned.

The group noted that the pricing structure disproportionately affects productive sectors such as factories, cold storage facilities, and other energy-intensive industries, thereby discouraging local manufacturing and making imports more attractive. It questioned how Ghana could talk about industrialization when the very foundation of industry—reliable and affordable power—is being used as a weapon against it.

FABAG further observed that the regressive tariffs do not just make power theft attractive but, in many cases, make it seem rational. As electricity bills become unbearable and enforcement remains inconsistent, many see illegal connections as the only way to survive. The association maintained that while theft should never be condoned, the current system practically dares citizens and businesses to take matters into their own hands.

“The PURC must understand that pouring water into a leaking bucket does not save water,” the statement said, adding that no amount of tariff increase can sustainably compensate for inefficiency, mismanagement, corruption, poor revenue collection, and bad debts within the utilities.

FABAG described the government’s pricing system as a trap that kills jobs, discourages investment, and fuels criminality. “The more one tries to play by the rules, the more one is made to suffer,” it lamented. The group called for immediate reforms, including a full audit of the real cost of power production and distribution, a simplified and transparent tariff structure that rewards efficiency and productive use, and urgent relief for businesses, particularly those in manufacturing and agribusiness. It also urged a crackdown on internal waste and corruption in the power sector, as well as the implementation of measurable cost-cutting strategies to restore efficiency and sustainability.

FABAG concluded by describing the situation as a call to action for every entrepreneur, investor, and citizen who believes in Ghana’s future. “We cannot develop in darkness—not just the physical kind, but the darkness of bad policy and willful economic sabotage. Enough is enough. We are tired of lip service and empty promises. Electricity must empower, not impoverish,” the statement declared.

The association called on His Excellency the President to act immediately and urged the PURC to stand up for honest businesses and hardworking Ghanaians.

Removed Chief Justice Drags State Back to Court

0
Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo

Accra, Oct. 17, 2025 — The removed Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has filed a fresh action at the High Court in Accra, challenging what she describes as the “unconstitutional and abusive” actions of the Pwamang Committee, the body that recommended her removal from office.

Filed at exactly 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, under case number HR/0009/2026, the application invokes the supervisory jurisdiction of the High Court under Articles 23, 141, and 296 of the 1992 Constitution, and Order 55 of C.I. 47.

In her application for judicial review, Justice Torkornoo is seeking orders of certiorari to quash the findings and recommendations of the Article 146 Committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, JSC, as well as the Presidential Warrant dated September 1, 2025, which formally removed her from office.

She is also asking the court to issue prohibition orders restraining the consideration or appointment of a new substantive Chief Justice and preventing the withdrawal of her salary, benefits, and other entitlements pending the outcome of the suit.

Grounds of the Application

In a detailed statement accompanying the motion, Justice Torkornoo contends that the findings of the Pwamang Committee were “unfair, unreasonable, illogical, irrational, perverse, and absurd,” amounting to an abuse of the powers conferred by the Constitution.

She argues that the committee’s conclusions of “stated misconduct” were based on expenditures for her official vacation that were not administered by her, but rather authorized and processed by the Judicial Secretary, the Director of Finance, the Director of Budget, and the Director of Audit — all officers duly responsible under the Judicial Service’s Travel Policy.

According to the former Chief Justice, the said expenditures had not been disallowed nor surcharged by the Auditor-General in the 2023 audited accounts of the Judicial Service, as required under Article 187(7) of the Constitution.

“The committee’s purported finding of misconduct against me for legitimate administrative expenditures duly authorized by the responsible officers of the Judicial Service constitutes an abuse of power and is therefore unconstitutional and illegal,” her affidavit reads in part.

Claims of Constitutional Breach

Justice Torkornoo further argues that the entire proceedings of the Article 146 Committee violated Articles 23, 296, 146(3), 146(7), 280(1), and 295 of the Constitution, and therefore are “illegal, void and of no effect.”

She insists the committee’s work was conducted “in breach of the rules of natural justice” and followed an adversarial procedure contrary to the impartial inquiry required under Article 146.

The former Chief Justice also claims that the committee’s findings on administrative decisions — including the transfer of judges and recommendations for appointments — were within her constitutional duties as head of the Judiciary under Article 125(4), and could not properly amount to misconduct.

Reliefs Sought

Justice Torkornoo is praying the High Court to:

1. Quash the proceedings and recommendations of the Pwamang Committee;

2. Quash the Presidential Warrant removing her from office;

3. Prohibit the appointment of a new Chief Justice;

4. Prevent the denial or withdrawal of her salary and entitlements; and

5. Grant any other reliefs the court may deem fit.

The respondents in the case are the Attorney-General and the President of the Republic, to be served at the Law House and the Jubilee House respectively.

The application, filed by her counsel Adu-Kusi Pruc Legal Chambers, is expected to be heard at a later date to be fixed by the Registrar of the High Court.

If successful, the suit could reopen one of the most contentious judicial and constitutional debates in recent years — the removal of a sitting Chief Justice and the scope of presidential and committee powers under Article 146 of Ghana’s Constitution
