Outrage as South Korean official suggests ‘importing’ foreign women to boost birth rate

South Korea has the lowest birth rate in the world

A South Korean official who suggested the country “import young women” from “Vietnam or Sri Lanka” to boost its birth-rate has been expelled from his party.

Kim Hee-soo, the head of the southern Jindo County, said the woman could be married off to “young men in rural areas” during a town hall last week.

The suggestion comes as South Korea continues to grapple with the lowest birth-rates in the world, which could see the country’s 50 million-strong population drop by half in 60 years.

But Kim’s statement, which was televised, did not go down well – triggering a diplomatic protest from Vietnam, days of public anger and his expulsion from the ruling Democratic Party.

Attempts by Kim to defuse the outrage with an apology a day after the town hall appear to have failed.

The town hall had been called to discuss a potential merger between the province where Jindo County is located and a nearby city – something regions with shrinking populations are looking at for administrative reasons.

Kim said his comment had been intended to highlight population issues in rural regions but admitted the language he had used was “inappropriate”, local media reported.

South Jeolla Province also issued a formal apology for Kim’s “inappropriate remarks”, which it said “has caused deep pain to Vietnamese people and to women”, local media reported.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Seoul had condemned Kim’s remarks, saying in a statement on Facebook that his words were “not simply a matter of expression but a matter of values and attitudes towards migrant women and minority groups”.

Sri Lanka authorities have not publicly addressed the controversy.

Venezuela opposition leader kidnapped

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said her opposition colleague Juan Pablo Guanipa has been kidnapped just hours after being released from detention.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner said on Sunday that Guanipa, leader of the Justice First party, was taken in the Los Chorros neighbourhood of the capital, Caracas.

“Heavily armed men dressed in civilian clothes arrived in four vehicles and took him away by force,” she wrote on social media early on Monday.

A former vice-president of the National Assembly, Guanipa spent eight months in prison and was among several political prisoners released since the US seized Venezuela’s then-President Nicolás Maduro in January.

Guanipa’s centre-right party said he had been kidnapped by the “repressive forces of the dictatorship” while he was moving between locations.

They added that those accompanying him said weapons were pointed at the group before Guanipa was loaded into a car.

“We hold Delcy Rodríguez, Jorge Rodríguez, and Diosdado Cabello responsible for any harm to Juan Pablo’s life,” Justice First wrote on social media, referring to Venezuela’s interim president, the National Assembly speaker, and the interior minister respectively.

The party also called on the international community to demand the “immediate release” of Guanipa and an end to the Venezuelan government’s “persecution of the opposition”.

Just hours earlier, Guanipa’s son Ramón was celebrating his father’s release on social media: “Our entire family will be able to hug again soon.”

He subsequently posted a video online in which he demanded immediate proof that his father was still alive.

NNPP demands return of vehicles from defected Kano chairmen

NNPP

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has asked its former chairmen who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to return vehicles allocated to them during their time in the party.

The demand was made by the party’s Kano State Publicity Secretary, Engr. Ibrahim Karaye, while addressing journalists at a press briefing.

“These vehicles were given to support party activities and improve coordination within the local government areas,” he said.

He described the continued possession of the vehicles by the former chairmen as a violation of trust, stressing that the donation was made to the NNPP as an organisation.
“The Senator donated the vehicles to the party, not to individuals,” Karaye stated.

He warned that the affected former chairmen are expected to return the vehicles without delay.

He added that the party would not hesitate to pursue legal action if the directive is ignored.

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru

Following the attack on Okporojo in Oso-Edda, Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, a joint security team comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, Department of State Security, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has discovered shallow graves containing mutilated bodies in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area.

The troops were deployed in direct response to the gruesome killings and beheadings of four individuals in Okporojo village.

In a statement, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan-Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, said the atrocities demanded urgent intervention to restore peace, protect innocent lives, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He added that the Ebonyi State Government, in line with its constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property, imposed a curfew and temporarily closed schools in Amasiri to prevent escalation and ensure public safety.

According to Olalekan-Ayeni, the security agencies have been deployed to enforce the curfew, conduct uninterrupted investigations and security operations, protect medical teams, and manage the humanitarian implications of the crisis.

He said the joint teams have been carrying out intelligence-driven patrols, cordon-and-search operations, and forensic exhumations in the affected areas.

“Credible intelligence has revealed multiple burial sites containing both adults and children, highlighting the scale of the crimes and the need for a robust security presence to dismantle criminal networks and prevent further violence,” he added.

The Army stressed that the deployment of troops is not targeted at the people of Amasiri but at criminal elements exploiting communal tensions to commit heinous acts.

Bawku: Alhaji Seidu Abagre granted bail

Court

The High Court in Accra has granted bail to Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a 79-year-old retired teacher charged with allegedly acting as a chief in Bawku without lawful authority.

Presiding judge, Her Ladyship Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit, granted the bail after considering submissions from both the prosecution and the defence, citing Article 19(2)(c) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the presumption of innocence.

Alhaji Abagre, who was present in court, is standing trial in connection with the protracted Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

At the hearing, the court inquired whether the prosecution had filed its disclosures. Responding, the Deputy Attorney-General told the court that preparations were at an advanced stage.

“My Lady, we are at the tail end of preparations to file our witness statements. We therefore pray for a short adjournment to complete documentation and related discussions,” Dr Srem-Sai said. He added that some of the disclosures would be filed in camera, meaning they would not pass through the regular court registry.

Counsel for the defence, Martin Kpebu, said he had no objection to the filing of disclosures in camera, provided they were made available sufficiently ahead of time before they were tendered in evidence.

Following this, the defence renewed its bail application, relying on submissions made at the previous sitting. Counsel further assured the court that the accused was willing, for now, not to travel to Bawku until further orders of the court.

The prosecution indicated it did not oppose the bail application. Dr Srem-Sai told the court that the Attorney-General’s office had no objection, save for “one or two other matters” which, he noted, might require approaching the bench for further discussion.

In her ruling, Justice Abdul-Bassit said the court had carefully considered the facts of the case and submissions from both sides. She subsequently granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.

As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered Alhaji Abagre to report to the police headquarters twice a week—on Mondays and Thursdays.

He is also restricted from leaving the Greater Accra Region unless he first applies to the court for permission.

Additionally, the accused was directed to refrain from parading himself as a chief or holding himself out as a leader or traditional authority figure.

The court further ordered the prosecution to ensure that the accused receives medical attention and is provided with adequate security until further notice, taking into account his age and circumstances.
The case has been adjourned to March 23 for continuation.

Abu Trica demands GH¢10M compensation for inhumane treatment

0
Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica

Fredrick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has filed a suit at the Human Rights Division of the High Court in Accra, accusing five state and foreign entities of violating his fundamental human rights during his arrest and detention.

The application, brought under Article 33(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 67 of the High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, seeks the enforcement of Mr. Kumi’s rights as guaranteed under Chapter Five of the Constitution.

The respondents named in the suit are the Minister for the Interior, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and the Attorney-General.

According to court documents, Mr. Kumi alleges that he was arrested on December 11, 2025, and subjected to prolonged detention from morning until late evening while continuously restrained in handcuffs.

He claims he was denied food, water, rest, and other basic necessities, and was exposed to physical and psychological distress.

He is, therefore, asking the court to declare that his treatment constituted torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment in violation of Article 15 of the Constitution.

The applicant further contends that he was interrogated while in handcuffs, surrounded by armed officers, and allegedly threatened and intimidated, all without access to a lawyer of his choice.

He argues that these actions violated his constitutional rights to dignity, legal representation, and a fair trial as guaranteed under Articles 15 and 19 of the Constitution.

Mr. Kumi also claims that officers of NACOC, EOCO, and the Attorney-General’s office detained, interrogated, and arraigned him before a court without first granting him access to counsel, an action he says fundamentally undermined his right to a fair trial.

A major aspect of the suit relates to the alleged involvement of agents of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mr. Kumi asserts that FBI agents, described in the suit as foreign law enforcement personnel, directly interrogated him while he was in custody and without the presence of his lawyer.

He argues that the FBI has no independent powers of arrest, detention, or interrogation within Ghana, and that any such actions taken by its agents were unlawful, ultra vires, and unconstitutional.

He is consequently seeking a declaration restraining the FBI and its agents from exercising any investigative or interrogation powers over him within Ghana.

The applicant is also challenging the legality of a search conducted at his residence, known as “Abu Trica’s Mansion,” located at CP-0969-1943, Swedru.

He alleges that the search was carried out while he was already in custody and without giving him the opportunity to be present or represented, an act he says violated his rights to privacy, property, and fair administrative process under Articles 18 and 23 of the Constitution.

Additionally, Mr. Kumi is protesting the alleged recording of him while in custody and the subsequent circulation of the footage on social media.

He argues that the recording and publication violated his rights to dignity, privacy, and reputation.

He is also taking issue with a news release allegedly issued by EOCO describing him as a “notorious cyber-criminal” prior to any judicial determination of guilt.

According to him, this publication violated his constitutional right to the presumption of innocence.

Among the reliefs being sought, the applicant is asking the court to exclude and render inadmissible any evidence obtained from the search of his residence, as well as any statements, passwords, electronic data, or information allegedly obtained from him during custodial interrogation without legal counsel or under coercive conditions.

Mr. Kumi is further seeking an interlocutory injunction to restrain the respondents from extraditing, deporting, or otherwise removing him from Ghana pending the final determination.

The two suspects arrested with firearms and ammunition retrieved from them.
The Oti Regional Police Command has arrested two persons for possession of arms and ammunition without lawful authority after intercepting a truck transporting concealed ammunition from Accra to Kpandai in the Northern Region.

The arrest followed intelligence received by the Oti Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) on February 7, 2026, indicating that a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GS 4677–17 had been loaded with boxes of ammunition and was en route to Kpandai.

The information was promptly relayed to the Regional PID Director, ASP Maxwell Osafo-Adamu, who deployed an intelligence team to monitor and intercept the vehicle.

On February 8, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m., the team laid an ambush and successfully intercepted the Kia Rhino.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed one locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun and 21 boxes containing a total of 525 rounds of Lion AAA and BB ammunition.

The items were concealed among building materials in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Abubakari Salam Atta, and his mate, Kabuja Kwadwo Tademe, were arrested at the scene. According to the police, the two suspects claimed ownership of the firearm and ammunition retrieved from the vehicle.

Both suspects are currently in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations and are expected to be processed for court in accordance with the law.

The police have reiterated their commitment to combating the illegal possession and trafficking of firearms and ammunition, noting that such activities pose a serious threat to public safety and national security.

The Command has also appealed to the public to continue providing timely information to support police efforts in maintaining peace and security in the region.

Photographs of the suspects and the retrieved exhibits have been secured as part of the investigation.
