Van Vicker and wife

Actor Van Vicker has shared on social media the secret to a long-lasting marriage.

Married for twenty years, the Actor shared his insights in a live video, confident that his journey qualifies him to address this topic.

According to Van Vicker, the secret to a flourishing marriage centre around a mindful approach to handling finances as a united couple. He is therefore advocating for the amalgamation of incomes and expenses, alongside fostering transparent conversations about monetary matters.

“To me, one of the most significant aspects is not dividing your income and expenses. I believe that being open about your earnings, the sources of income, and your finances is fundamental for maintaining a strong bond. Make expenditures together, create budgets together, and pool your resources,” he emphasized.

Mr. Vicker says couples should rather concentrate on collaborative financial planning.

Sharing financial responsibilities cultivates a sense of unity and a shared understanding, Mr. Vicker advises.

Vicker also emphasized on the significance of communication between partners and the value of actively listening to one another.

His viewpoint has sparked a diverse array of opinions and discussions among internet users. While some applaud his perspective, others contend that joint financial management can sometimes lead to mismanagement of funds.

Former Niger rebel launches anti-coup movement as impasse continues

Members of a military council that staged a coup in Niger attend a rally at a stadium in Niamey, Niger, August 6, 2023

A former rebel leader and politician in Niger has launched a movement opposing the military government that took power in a July 26 coup, a first sign of internal resistance to army rule in the strategically important Sahel country.

In a statement seen on Wednesday, Rhissa Ag Boula said his new Council of Resistance for the Republic (CRR) aims to reinstate overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum who has been in detention at his residence since the takeover.

“Niger is the victim of a tragedy orchestrated by people charged with protecting it,” the statement said.

The announcement comes as diplomatic efforts to reverse the coup have stalled after the military government rejected the latest diplomatic mission from the African Union and the  Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Niger’s coup leaders denied entry to African and United Nations envoys on Tuesday, resisting pressure to negotiate before a summit on Thursday at which heads of state from the ECOWAS will discuss the possible use of force.

IGHD calls for all inclusiveness in CPHIA 2023 conference.

0
Dr. Magda Robalo

The President and Co-founder of Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD), Guinea-Bissau, who also leads CPHIA 2023 track on For Women by Women, Dr. Magda Robalo, has called for all inclusiveness in the Africa Centre for Disease Control’s annual International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA) this year.

According to her, there is the need for all and sundry to participate in this year’s conference to deliberate more on Women in Health; from Recipients to Providers to Leaders.

Also, specifically on unique barriers that hinder women’s access to essential healthcare services, including reproductive health, maternal care, sexual health, and mental well-being and the need for gender-responsive and women-centered solutions to address the disparities and work towards achieving equitable healthcare for all and other relatively important themes.

The annual Conference is being hosted by the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the African Union in partnership with Zambia Ministry of Health.

This year’s conference is scheduled for 27-30 November 2023 in Lusaka, Zambia, and it will take a more forward-looking approach, highlighting how stakeholders across the continent are breaking barriers and disrupting the status quo through cutting-edge science and programming under the theme “Breaking Barriers: Repositioning Africa in the global health architecture.”

The conference will focus on 9 tracks that will be discussed such as;

Epidemiology, Diagnostics and Clinical Management of Emerging and Re-emerging High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID) in Africa

  • Increasing Local Production in Africa: Advocacy, Research and Development Capacity in Diagnostics, Therapeutics and Vaccine Manufacturing
  • Strengthening Health Systems for Equitable and Universal Health Coverage in Africa
  • Women in Health – from Recipients to Providers to Leaders
  • Safeguarding Africa’s Health Security: health emergencies, biosecurity, climate change, and multi-sectoral response mechanisms
  • Digital Innovations in Health – Delivering Universal, Affordable, Connected and Resilient Health Systems
  • Whole-of-society – the Power of Engaging Civil Society, Philanthropy, Community Actors, and the Private Sector
  • A Renewed focus on Africa’s Major Infectious Diseases: HIV, TB and Malaria and NTDs
  • Non-Communicable Diseases – a Growing Public Health Threat in Africa

Sharing her view on the on unique barriers that hinder women’s access to essential healthcare services, including reproductive health, maternal care, sexual health, and mental well-being the need for gender-responsive and women-centered solutions to address the disparities and work towards achieving equitable healthcare for all and other relatively important themes, Dr. Magda Robalo, said most health facilities lack the confidentiality that is required for offering testing services to the people.

Citing an example, she said this is because “when you see a global health in most countries, we focus on reproductive health for women. We forget that before becoming women of reproductive age, when you can child bear, you have other health needs. You have had health problems that require attention.

Even when you have, after your child very age, you also still have health needs which are not taken into consideration”.

Furthermore, Dr. Magda said the health care system, focus particularly during the productive health age and the productive health needs, family planning, maternal health, forgetting that women also have cancer, women have cardiovascular diseases, and women have mental health problems.

This, she said there is the need for a holistic approach to the health of women within the health system so that women can access the services they need, and they can be looked at by a nurse, by a doctor, as a woman, a human being that has other health challenges, not necessarily only for the reproductive health overall.

Also, she disclosed that the challenges with women’s health is not just a problem in Africa but across the world, “this is a problem that the lack of domestic perspective in when it comes to women’s health is not particular to Africa.

We see that’s across the world cause, in Africa is worse than other parts of the world. But across the world, we see that women are consistently diagnosed later of disease or misdiagnosed than men”.

“We see that clinical trials of reproductive health diseases are more often conducted on male patients or male candidates. And the diseases are better known and diagnosed in men than in women.

And when it comes also about trying testing medicine to treat particular diseases, you’ll see that the scientific knowledge is more abundant on how those medicines acts in male bodies than in female bodies, because the tests of the clinical trials are done mostly in men”. Dr. Magda added.

She also emphasized on social and cultural traditions, and beliefs that our societies have, over the centuries established as norms that make women the weaker member of the family.

Another factor on barriers that hinder women’s access to essential healthcare services, Dr. Magda said is also stigma in the health facilities about young girls who, who are too young to be considered a woman and too old to be considered a child and they don’t find the right space in health facilities for adolescents to ask questions that comes in the transformations their body go through.

On ways that health services should address challenges that come with women’s access to essential healthcare she said it is important to recognize women’s health in a ballistic passion, thus to see women beyond reproductive health and violence.

“More so, a holistic approach to women’s health from birth to death is critical for our health systems. If we don’t reform our systems to provide services that will take care of women from day to day, different types of services, which will care for particularly needs of women’s help”, Dr. Magda mentioned.

She urged health services providers to invest more in research about women’s health so that they have a better understanding of what happens to the women’s body from birth to death by coming up with preventive tools and diagnostic tools that are specific to the health needs of women.

She concluded by urging the need to also address is the all issue of gender inequality, saying, “As long as women continue to be trapped into the social and cultural norms that put them at the low level, in our societies it will be difficult for women to try and access health care as and when they need it. So we need to check gender inequality if women are to be given the health care they need at every stage of their lives”

Fear civilian uprising more than military coups -Bagbin

0
Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin, has cautioned African leaders to fear civil disobedience more than military coups.

“What we need to fear is not coups, but civil disobedience and uprising. When the people do not get what they want, they get fed up and they rise up. And when they rise up, you do not know whom they are coming to,” he said.

Justifying why Ghanaians do not need coup, Speaker Bagbin explained that the country had learnt a lot from coups, and that anytime there was one, the military suffered most of the casualties.

It is as a result of this that Alban Kingsford Bagbin is advocating for open governance where governments listened to those whose thumbs elected them. “It’s important we listen to the people who elected us. One mistake we make is that our democracy is not developing, because those we elected are assumed to know, and that is not the case, so [in] all the countries surrounding us there are explosions.”

Speaker Bagbin said this when he led a delegation of parliamentarians to call on the Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketia V.

The Speaker used the visit to invite the Paramount Chief to the 30th celebration of Parliamentary Democracy in Ghana, which was being held in Takoradi.

Alban Kingsford Bagbin was accompanied by the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Eric Afful, MP for Amenfi West, Joseph Cudjoe, MP for Effia, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, MP for Takoradi amongst other legislators.

Speaker Bagbin seized the opportunity to express worry over the barring of traditional leaders from engaging in active politics, and called for a second look at that article as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution

“None of us politicians have wisdom than our Chief, Nana Kobina Nketia,” he said.

He did not understand why the constitution in one breath called for all inclusive government, and yet in another barred traditional leaders from contributing their knowledge and worth.

The Speaker also expressed worry over the minimal number of women elected into Parliament, as out of the 275 MPs, only 42 were women.

Nana Kobina Nketia, who accepted the Speaker’s invitation to be at the programme, expressed worry over some conducts in the House of Parliament.

He explained that, the business of the House needed to be taken serious, because Ghana’s sovereignty resided in no other arm of government than Parliament.

Awulae Angamatuo Gyan, Paramount Chief of Gwira, lauded Speaker Bagbin for effecting changes in the House.

He said: “As Africans, we have our way of life, and we must be known for that.”

Present at the Palace were Nana Kwesi Agyemang, Omanhene of Lower Dixcove, and Awulae Amihere Kpanyile.

Health Benefits of Soy Milk

0
Soy milk

Soy milk is a well-known dairy milk replacement, but it’s not just a substitute ingredient. Soy milk can be a worthwhile addition to your diet on its own. This healthy, flavorful beverage first came about as a waste product on the way to making tofu. Today, soy milk can be found around the country as a lactose-free dairy substitute with health benefits that are all its own.

Health Benefits

The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in soy milk can provide important health benefits. For example, the forms of vitamin B found in soy milk are important for helping your body maintain your nerve cells and DNA. They can also help you avoid certain forms of anemia, which can prevent tiredness and fatigue.

Soy milk is also high in protein. The protein in soy milk is healthy, plant-based, and can help support healthy muscles and organs.

In addition, soy milks can provide other health benefits like:

Brain Health

Soy milk is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are “healthy” fats that your body cannot form on its own. Omega-3 fatty acids are linked to a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Soy milk is still being studied for its effect on these diseases, but soy in general is one of the best non-animal sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Improved Heart Health

Soy milk can also help support your cardiovascular system. Soy milk is an excellent source of potassium, whether or not it has been fortified. Potassium is deeply connected to maintaining lower blood pressure and a regular pulse. Furthermore, soy milk has been linked to lower cholesterol levels, especially in people who have high cholesterol.

Reduced Symptoms of Menopause

Soy milk contains isoflavones, which are a class of chemical known as “phytoestrogens.” These isoflavones react in the body like a weak form of estrogen. Because of that, studies have shown that consuming soy milk and other soy products might help reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes.

Nutrition

Most soy milk found in supermarkets and health food stores is fortified with added nutrients. This makes fortified soy milk a great source of calcium, which is the most common mineral in your body. Consuming enough calcium can help strengthen your bones and reduce your risk of osteoporosis.

Things to Watch Out For

While isoflavones can help reduce symptoms of menopause, they may also have negative effects. More research is needed, but some studies point towards isoflavones being linked to reduced thyroid function.

These isoflavones may affect how your body produces thyroid hormones. However, these studies are still inconclusive and need further support. As long as you consume enough iodine in your daily diet, there are no signs that drinking soy milk will significantly affect your thyroid function.

Anyone with an allergy to soy products should avoid drinking soy milk. Soy milk used in recipes can also trigger allergic reactions, so it’s best to avoid soy milk entirely if a member of your household has soy allergies.

How to add Soy Milk to Your Diet

Soy milk can be found in grocery stores, health food stores, and restaurants around the country. You can also make soy milk at home.

Soak ten ounces of soybeans in water overnight. Then boil these beans in twelve cups of water for ten minutes. Blend the water and soybeans together until smooth, then simmer for another forty minutes. If you like, you can add a pinch of salt or sugar to taste. When you finish simmering the soybeans, strain the mixture through cheesecloth to remove solids. You can store the soymilk for up to a week — about as long as dairy milk lasts.

Here are some ways you can include soy milk in your diet:

Add soy milk to a smoothie

Use soy milk in your coffee

Eat cereal with soy milk

Use soy milk in baked goods

Make a bechamel sauce with soy milk

Use soy milk in curry

European Leagues Kick-off This Weekend; Preview, Predictions, Surprise packages & more

0
Premier League

Europe’s top leagues begin to get under way across the continent this weekend. Can Arsenal knock City off the top? Who will reign in Spain? Will anyone knock Bayern off their perch? Can Napoli retain the Scudetto? Which wonderkid should you look out for?

PREMIER LEAGUE

The new Premier League season gets underway this Friday as defending champions and Treble winners Manchester City make the trip to newly-promoted Burnley. The only way I see Man City not winning the league is if they take their foot off the pedal after winning the treble. The thing is I just don’t see Pep Guardiola letting that happen.

City won’t have it all their own way but I do think they edge it again. Arsenal will be stronger after last season too. Mikel Arteta will have learned lessons from watching his side fall away and they have added greater strength in depth in Declan Rice and Kai Havertz.

I fancy Liverpool to make it but they need to find replacement for Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in midfield. Alexis Mac Allister is a terrific signing and gives them something different while Curtis Jones is emerging into an integral part of the team.

United have done good business in Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund and the arrival of a ball-playing goalkeeper in Andre Onana will change the way they play and control games, especially away from home.

Newcastle might just miss out because of the extra Champions League fixtures. Chelsea will need a bit of time under Mauricio Pochettino to settle into the way he wants to play. Tottenham have improved their attack with James Maddison but still don’t have the defenders they need to be solid at the back and that will cost them – again.

Relegation – Sheffield United, Luton, Bournemouth: Luton is an incredible story and they have done brilliantly to get to the Premier League but they will go straight back down. With the investment Premier League clubs are making and the quality they are bringing in, it’s going to be so hard for them.

It’s going to be tight for the final spot between Forest, Burnley, Bournemouth and Everton. I know the new Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is highly-regarded but he’s going to have to cut his teeth on the job with no previous Premier League experience. Although they have made some good signings, especially Justin Kluivert, I think the experience of Steve Cooper and Sean Dyche, as well as Vincent Kompany’s knowledge of the league, will give them the edge.

LA LIGA – SPAIN

Xavi’s Barcelona are the reigning champions but will again face competition for the title from Real Madrid, who have strengthened with the signing of Jude Bellingham and teenage sensation Arda Guler but sold captain Karim Benzema to Al-Ittihad and lost Marco Asensio to Paris St-Germain.

Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad will join Barca and Real in the Champions League group stages.

La Liga Spain

Real Valladolid, Espanyol and Elche were relegated to the Segunda Division, with Granada, Las Palmas and Alaves taking their place in the top tier of Spanish football.

Barcelona will spend the season away from the Nou Camp as it undergoes renovation, moving to the Montjuic stadium in the city.

Prediction: Neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona look dramatically better or worse. Barcelona will have more problems with a drop in hunger, a move to Montjuic and increased focus on Europe.

Surprise Package: Getafe. Given Girona, Rayo and Osasuna can no longer be counted as surprises, Getafe will come bounding back to mid-table and perhaps even the European race under the expert tutelage of Jose Bordalas. Slightly risky given goalscorer Enes Unal is out until January, but Getafe underperformed last season, and Bordalas almost always overperforms.

SERIE A – ITALY

After winning their first Scudetto in more than 30 years, Napoli face a tough task in retaining their title under new manager Rudi Garcia, while Juventus, who finished seventh, will be wanting to make up for ground lost last season after being docked points over the club’s transfer dealings.

Lazio, Inter Milan and AC Milan join Napoli in the Champions League group stages, while Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari, Frosinone and Genoa are the sides with a point to prove after earning promotion from Serie B.

Inter, with star forward Lautaro Martinez joined by new recruit Marcus Thuram, should have plenty of goals in them.

Prediction: Inter. Last season’s Champions League finalists should have challenged for the title last season and will surely start this new campaign as favourites again. Having reinforced their midfield even further, they boast strength in the middle and in defence and possess one of the finest strikers in the league.

The attack is yet to be completed considering the departure of both Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku but Simone Inzaghi has shown that he is adept at creating teams that can play in a multitude of ways to secure victories. With Napoli bringing in a new coach and Milan signing so many new players, it is Inter who boast stability and the chance to continue this project that should lead them to another title.

Top scorer: Victor Osimhen. In a year when everyone is desperate to buy the perfect and complete striker, Napoli can boast one of the very best number nines in the world. Fresh from lifting the Scudetto with Napoli, the club can count themselves lucky to have kept the player within the ranks.

Serie A – Italy

Smart, technically gifted, strong and with a mentality that belongs to the elite, Osimhen was top scorer last season and is the favourite to score an endless amount of goals again this term.

Surprise Package: Atalanta. Having sold Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United for a hefty profit, Atalanta have reinvested that money to bring in both Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere, two players who have yet to demonstrate their full potential. However, under Gian Piero Gasperini, a coach renowned for teaching football and developing great talent, Atalanta could be the team to watch this season.

Player to watch: Samuel Chukwueze. Milan have had a busy summer on the transfer market. They may have sold fan favourite Sandro Tonali but they have reinforced the squad especially in the attacking areas. With lots of names to look out for from Christian Pulisic to Yunus Musah, it is Chukwueze who could well make the difference.

For some time, Milan have had a lopsided attack, dependent on the attacking potential of Rafael Leao on the left. With Chukwueze set to play on the right, Milan will boast balance and two explosive and dynamic players on either wing.

Chukwueze is unpredictable, electric and capable of providing for the team on and off the ball.

Domestic debt restructuring took away our GH¢53.1b -BoG

0
The Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has disclosed that GH¢53.1 billion out of the GH¢60 billion losses reported in the 2022 financial statement was as a result of the government’s domestic debt restructuring exercise (phases 1 and II).

In a statement issued today, the BoG said, “The financial statements reported a total loss of GH¢60 billion, which has since become a matter of unfortunate politicisation. It is noteworthy that GH¢53.1 billion of those losses was a direct result of the Government’s domestic debt restructuring exercise (phases 1 and II)”.

The statement added that it is important to put the Bank of Ghana’s 2022 financial results in proper context with a clear statement of the problem that Ghana faced and the chronology of events in Ghana since 2019.

Also, it indicated that there was a clear mismatch between revenue inflows and expenditure financed in 2020 by exceptional support from the IMF and World Bank resources, in addition to financing from the Bank of Ghana through the issuance of the GH¢10 billion COVID-19 bond.

It is as a result of this that the sovereign spreads on Ghana bonds widened, signaling investor dissatisfaction with the stance of fiscal policy.

The institution further disclosed that the Budget for 2022, which was read in 2021, failed to address fiscal concerns as the Budget was even more expansionary by about 23% with a raft of revenue measures to raise financing.

It is for this reason that the Credit Rating Agencies further downgraded Ghana’s sovereign debt rating, which blocked Ghana’s access to international capital market borrowing.

“This triggered a liquidity crisis, spilling over into a balance of payments crisis. External and domestic payments needed to be made, the domestic auction was failing, and the Bank of Ghana had to step in to arrest a major economic and social crisis.

“In two months, the Bank of Ghana lost US$500 million in reserves and built a significant overdraft with the government as a result of the auction failures. It became clear that Ghana was on a path that was unsustainable, and the Government had to approach the IMF for support in July 2022”, the statement read.

In this regard, the Bank of Ghana has assured key stakeholders and the general public that it is committed to the highest standards of prudent management, governance, and transparent accounting and audit practices.

Tax on betting recipe for chaos -Concerned Bettors of Ghana

0

A group calling itself Concerned Bettors of Ghana has rejected the 10% tax imposition on all betting, lottery, and gaming wins.

According to a statement issued by the group, an attempt to levy the youth who are into betting “is a recipe for chaos.”

Richard Aguda, the Convener of the group, described the tax in the statement as clueless,” arguing that because of the lack of jobs, betting had become a source of livelihood for the youth.

10% withholding tax on lotto & gaming winnings wins starts August 15

Read full statement

OPPOSITION TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF 10% TAX ON BETTING, GAMES AND LOTTERY WINS ON 15TH AUGUST, 2023.

We, the above mentioned association, rejects the announcement by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to the public for the implementation 10% tax on all betting, games and lottery wins, from Tuesday, 15* August, 2023.

CBOG wishes to say that an attempt to go ahead to levy the ordinary Ghanaian, especially the youth in betting, in an already tax-burdened society is a recipe for chaos.

Betting, games and lottery has become an avenue for livelihood for millions of Ghanaian youth due to unavailability of existing jobs and taking 10% of its winnings is a scandalous means to push the youth into a more abject poverty.

The association in its press release in April this year on the rejection of 10% tax was of the hope that government would have listened to the plea of the teaming youth in betting, but was as usual, ignored.

Taxing the very source of survival for many Ghanaians in this current economic hardship is clueless and must be rejected.

Afriyie Akoto wins hearts of W/North delegates

0
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto

Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Western North Region of Ghana have pledged to reward Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto for making a positive impact in their lives.

According to the delegates, the impact of the government’s flagship project, planting for Food and Jobs (Pf&J) as well as smallholder farmers in the region, was so incredible that poverty levels in the region have drastically reduced.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto spearheaded the implementation of the Planting for Food and Jobs project.

They are also of the view that Dr. Akoto’s contribution to the party in the region is unmatched. Therefore, it was proper to appreciate him with their votes when the party goes to the polls (Super Delegates Conference) on August 26, 2023 to elect five candidates for the December showdown.

The delegates made the pledge when they paid a courtesy call on Dr. Akoto at his Kumasi residence last Saturday.

The delegates were made up of Polling Station Executives, Electoral Area Coordinators, Constituency Executives and Regional Executives drawn from Aowin, Suaman, Bibiani-Anhwiaso Bekwai, Sefwi Wiaso, Sefwi Akontombra, Juaboso, Bodi, Bia West and Bia East constituencies.

A former Deputy Western Regional Organiser of the NPP, Juliana Aidoo (a.k. Obaa Akua) said in an interview that “their affection for Dr. Akoto needs no introduction.

“Dr. Akoto has been with us for so many years. His ties with the party in Western North Region even deepened when he became the Minister of Food and Agriculture. He has been so supportive to the party. Under his watch as Minister for Food and Agriculture, he transformed so many lives.

“Where we have gotten to as a party and a country, we need a practically oriented person to turn things around. Dr Akoto has demonstrated that, which is why all of us have endorsed him and pledged to work tirelessly to get more delegates to vote for him,” she noted.

She added: “Let no one cross his path. Dr. Afriyie Akoto is the only candidate who perfectly understands the structures of the party and can change things around for the betterment of all”.

Having experienced the impactful hands of Dr. Akoto, the delegates, according to Obaa Akua, are convinced that he is the only candidate who practically possesses the means to turn around the fortunes of the UP tradition and the Ghanaian economy.

She urged all to rally around Dr. Afriyie Akoto to save the NPP and the Ghanaian economy.
