THE FORGIVING GOD

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction. – Psalm 1:1-6.

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.  I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you – Psalm 119:9-11

INTRODUCTION

In Psalm 103, David praised God because of all the good things He had done, outlining the benefits we receive from Him through His unmerited grace. David noted that the faithful love of God is great and incomparable. God is the ultimate Father in His compassion to His children, and for this He is worthy of our never-endingpraise.

The God who forgives our sins, redeems our lives, and satisfies our desires is the same God who gives us access into the very heart of who He is through His Word. Because God’s Word is such a gift, He expects it to be taken seriously, which means we obey God’s laws and look to His Word as the guide for our lives. The power, inspiration, and truth of God’s Word demand and the careful study and dedicated application of it, the end result of which is unspeakable joy.

PSALM 103:1-22

Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the people of Israel: The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will He harbor His anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him; for He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust. The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.

But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear Him, and His righteousness with their children’s children— with those who keep His covenant and remember to obey His precepts. The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.

Praise the LORD, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word. Praise the LORD, all His heavenly hosts, you His servants who do His will. Praise the LORD, all His works everywhere in His dominion. Praise the LORD, my soul.

PSALM 119:1-48

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. Blessed are those who keep His statutes and seek Him with all their heart— they do no wrong but follow His ways. You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.

I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me. How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Praise be to you, LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

Be good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your word. Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me.

My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times. You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed, those who stray from your commands. Remove from me their scorn and contempt, for I keep your statutes. Though rulers sit together and slander me, your servant will meditate on your decrees. Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.

I am laid low in the dust; preserve my life according to your word. I gave an account of my ways and you answered me; teach me your decrees. Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.

My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me and teach me your law.   I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on your laws. I hold fast to your statutes, LORD; do not let me be put to shame.

I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding.Teach me, LORD, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.

Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.

May your unfailing love come to me, LORD, your salvation, according to your promise; then I can answer anyone who taunts me, for I trust in your word. Never take your word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws.

I will always obey your law, for ever and ever. I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts. I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame, for I delight in your commands because I love them. I reach out for your commands, which I love, that I may meditate on your decrees.

Remain Blessed!

Feature: BoG’s Recklessness and Mismanagement and all that Populists Jazz.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is up in arms again and as usual it is all about the welfare of the poor and downtrodden. The opposition party is now attacking the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Ghana’s Central bank.

First, it came public that BoG has a negative equity position of GH¢55.1 billion or $4.9 billion. That is scary, to consider that we had to go to IMF and borrow $ 3 billion and BoG could go down by almost US$5 billion.

The question is, can Central banks go broke? According to Econpapers, Central banks can go broke and have done so, although mainly in developing countries.

The conventional balance sheet of the central bank is uninformative about the financial resources it has at its disposal and about its ability to act as an effective lender of last resort and market marker of last resort.

As long as central banks don’t have significant foreign exchange-denominated liabilities or index-linked liabilities, it will always be possible for the central bank to ensure its solvency though monetary issuance (seigniorage).

However, the scale of the recourse to seigniorage required to safeguard central bank solvency may undermine price stability. In addition, there are limits to the amount of real resources the central bank can appropriate by increasing the issuance of nominal base money.

For both these reasons, it may be desirable for the Treasury to recapitalise the central bank should the central bank suffer a major capital loss as a result of its lender of last resort and market maker of last resort activities.

BIS Bulletin 68, explains further how Central banks can go broke even in first world economies as well.

Central banks have increasingly deployed their balance sheets in recent decades as a tool to pursue macroeconomic and financial stability objectives in support of their economies.

After the Great Financial Crisis (GFC), some advanced economy (AE) central banks used asset purchase programmes (APPs) or other lending programmes to achieve their policy aims. Others introduced such programmes during the Covid19 pandemic.

These were funded mainly through interest-bearing commercial bank reserves, resulting in a declining share of interest-free liabilities. In doing so and to pursue their policy objectives, central banks took financial positions, which influence their profits and losses as a by-product.

When central banks increase interest rates to curb inflation, their net interest income declines, since a large portion of their liabilities is linked to policy rates.1.

Asset valuations also decline with rising bond yields, putting further pressure on profitability for central banks using an accounting treatment that recognises changes in market values in calculating net profits.

Reflecting these dynamics, some central banks have recently reported losses, and more are expected to follow.2. In some cases and depending on accounting approaches, losses are sizeable and can result in negative equity.

From this, one can never doubt that during the 80’s and 90’s at the time Ghana’s economy was worse managed during this country’s history, BoG went broke, bankrupt. But, guess what, if there were occasions when BoG went bankrupt in the PNDC/NDC days, the populists will rationalize it. Trust them they will.

BIS has clearly explained what is happening to some Central banks and the reasons cannot be assigned to mismanagement. In finance, such things do happen, that is why the economist will always say, “all things being equal.”

To incite the suffering public, there is a list of expenditures allegedly made by BoG in 2022. To make it look extraordinarily enormous, the amounts were converted in Old cedis. So, we have 1). Foreign and Domestic Travels, GH¢97.4 million or ¢ 974 billion; 2).

Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Running, GH¢131.6 million or ¢1.316 trillion; 3). Banking Supervision Expenses GH¢357.9 million or ¢3.579 trillion; 4). Directors’ Remuneration GH¢ 8.6 million or ¢86 billion; 5). Communication Expenses GH¢32 million or GH¢320 billion and 6). Computer Related Expenses GH¢ 67.9 million or ¢679 billion.

This is what has been put in the public domain and shortly after the NDC MPs served notice, given the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Addison, and his two deputies to within twenty-one days, resign from office or the NDC will evade BoG and take over the place.

I believe this could be a well calculated plan to overthrow the constitution by using another form of coup called popular revolt or uprising. The fact is BoG is one of the high security areas in the country and an attack on BoG is a direct attack on government.

With the current coup pandemic spreading across West Africa, and with the populace eager to get rid of those allegedly mismanaging their countries, there have been calls for coups across the sub region. One comic character on social media, who pronounced coups as coops, warned Ghana that they are coming.

West Africa is the sub-region in Africa where the most coups had taken place. Between 1952 when the first coup in Africa took place on July 23, in Egypt to the Sept 1, 1969 coup in Libya, totalling twelve coups in all, West Africa alone, recorded seven. To date West Africa has become the coup hub of Africa, so it will not be out of the ordinary to have one, in Ghana.

And, some populists are cleverly using the economic situation in Ghana to incite the people to rise up and overthrow this constitution.

Back to the millions, allegedly wasted by BoG. It is very surprising that a political party like the NDC will talk about wastage.

In 2009, when the NDC was voted back to power, then President John Evans Atta Mills, appointed a 12-memberTransitional Team to assist in the transition from the Kufuor Administration to his government. The twelve-member team was made up of Mr. P.V. Obeng, Chairman; Mr. Alex Segbefia, Secretary and Ms Hannah Tetteh, Spokesperson.

The other members who were chairpersons of sub-committees are, namely, Mr. Victor Gbeho; Dr. Don Arthur; Togbe Afede Asor XIV; Brig. Joseph Nunoo-Mensah; Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni; Mr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah; Betty Mould-Idrissu; Mr Kwame Peprah and Alhaji Mahama Idrissu.

The state was billed a total of GH¢361,924.41 for expenditure in the caring of the team. This included GH¢135,316.30 for snacks and lunch. This total bill did not include cost of free fuel drawn by the members.

In 2009, GH¢361,924.41 was equivalent to $280,263.70 and that amount today will be equivalent to GH¢3,138,953.40. It is very clear that the amount spent on the average, for each member of NDC Transitional Team in a month was equivalent to GH¢261,579.45.

Can the NDC come out to explain why so much was spent? Until BoG comes out to explain how it spent these monies in a year, I will not join in its condemnation. For if just twelve people can spend government’s money of today’s equivalent of GH¢3,138,953.40 in a month, then a very big institution like BoG should not be condemned for sinking in the Red with a figure of GH¢55.1 billion. And as BIS Bulletin stated it could for good reasons and not mismanagement that got BoG into the Red.

Having explained myself above, I will take this opportunity to draw Ghanaians minds to what the populists have done and do intend to do.

The PNDC overthrew the constitutional government of Hilla Limann in 1981. Ghanaians were told that life was too tough and rough, with premium petrol going for ¢12.50 to a gallon; regular petrol at ¢11.30 to a gallon; diesel at ¢8.50 to a gallon and kerosene at ¢5.00 to a gallon.

The PNDC proclaimed that this was certainly unbearable, and Ghanaians accepted. One other thing was, how could cutlass be sold for ¢15.66? And many cried out in support of the PNDC, screaming“we no go sit down make them cheat we, everyday!” The cedi which was trading at ¢2.75 to a USD was also very unacceptable.

On Thursday April 21, 1983, the PNDC read its first budget. Fuel prices shot up, with premium petrol going for ¢ 25.05 to a gallon; regular petrol shot to ¢21.45; diesel was up to ¢15.90 and kerosene, the main source of energy for the poor and downtrodden went from ¢5.00 a gallon to ¢13.20. Cutlass, which the poor farmer needed most, also went up from ¢ 15.66 for one to ¢50.00.

Then on October 11, 1983, the government devalued our currency to ¢30.00 to US$1. And in all this the people kept screaming, “We no go sit down make them cheat we, everyday!”

So, today, the NDC wants to hack on the challenges Ghanaians are facing to create a popular uprising, but can this resolve the current crisis? In 1981, the PNDC government came to power and the cedi stood at ¢2.75 to $1.00. After nineteen uninterrupted years, the PNDC/NDC exited the scene with the cedi at ¢6,750.00 to $1.00, an almost 300,000% depreciation.

That for Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson who is in court over recklessly spending the state’s € 2.37 million in buying defective ambulances, to be leading the charge that is insisting that BoG should get rid of its governor and his deputies, is unacceptable. This can only happen in Ghana.

Readers, I will humbly request you to find out what can make a Central bank go broke and let us wait for BoG to come and tell us what went wrong. I will hereby appeal to the NDC to desist from occupying the premises of BoG in its protest that could be suspected as another form of coup and could result into one.

Hon. Daniel Dugan

2023-24 European League season kicks off today; Previews & Fixtures

Rodri, Manchester City

Championship winners Burnley host Premiership holders City today

Manchester City begin their latest top-flight title defence against last term’s Championship winners Burnley at Turf Moor.

Pep Guardiola‘s men go into the new campaign off the back of an unforgettable treble-winning season, and their first hurdle to yet more history this time around comes in the shape of one of the club’s greatest-ever players – Burnley boss Vincent Kompany.

Even for a club that has enjoyed such enormous success as Man City have in the Guardiola era, the 2022-23 campaign will live long in the memory as the Citizens swept all before them.

There have been few signs that Man City will let their standards slip, though, and they once again go into the new season as favourites to lift the Premier League title – something that would see them become the first team in history to lift four top-flight English titles on the bounce, and further strengthen their claim to being the best team this country has ever produced.

The champions have also bolstered their ranks during the summer with Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic arriving, although they have lost two key figures of their recent success in captain Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez.

Turf Moor was a fortress in the Championship last season for Burnley and it will be bouncing as Premier League football returns under the floodlights on Friday, so we are expecting the hosts to give the champions a stern opening test.

Arsenal begin bid for Premier League supremacy at home to Nottingham Forest

Fresh from lifting another trophy aloft in the Wembley sunshine, Arsenal begin their latest bid for Premier League supremacy at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday lunchtime.

Rice, Arsenal

The Gunners ended their Manchester City hoodoo to win the Community Shield last weekend and are now out for a slice of revenge against the team who officially ended their title dreams last term.

The age-old debate over whether the Community Shield counts as a piece of silverware continues to rage, but Arsenal’s celebrations on the day were telling, as Arteta’s men finally ended their spate of dismal defeats against the treble winners and potentially gave themselves a huge psychological boost ahead of another title charge. The Arsenal doctors are already working overtime ahead of the start of the new season, as Gabriel Jesus will spend the next few weeks recovering from a knee operation.

Clean sheets at the Emirates may not have been Arsenal’s forte last term, but with a couple of Forest’s attackers yet to hit full fitness, the Gunners should commence the new season in perfect fashion. Such an outlay should also see the Gunners shut up shop at home more often than they did last term.

Spirits will already be extremely high in Arteta’s camp following their Community Shield success, and Turner’s North London homecoming will surely be a miserable one, as the hosts stroll to an opening-day win with a few goals in tow.

Real Madrid seek perfect start as they take on Athletic Bilbao

Real Madrid will be bidding to make the perfect start to their 2023-24 La Liga campaign when they head to San Mames on Saturday evening to take on Athletic Bilbao.

Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid

Los Blancos finished second in the table last season, 10 points behind the champions Barcelona, while Athletic were eighth, two points behind seventh-placed Osasuna in the race for European qualification.

Athletic have serious work to do in order to secure European qualification for the 2024-25 campaign. They will enter this match off the back of a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in Dublin last weekend, with the friendly rounding off their preparations for the new campaign.

Ernesto Valverde‘s side have not actually beaten Real Madrid in La Liga since March 2015, which is extremely worrying, but they did manage to hold Los Blancos to a 1-1 draw when the two teams last locked horns on the final matchday of last season.

Real Madrid has seen four incomings during the current market, with Jude BellinghamArda Guler and Fran Garcia arriving on permanent deals, while Joselu has joined on loan from Espanyol for the new season; Brahim Diaz is also back at the club following a loan spell at AC Milan.

Real Madrid fell short in both La Liga and the Champions League last season, but they did manage to win the Copa del Rey, and it will be fascinating to see how the team perform this term without Karim Benzema, who surprisingly ended his time at the club to move to Saudi Arabia.

Real Madrid have been through some teething problems during pre-season, but we are backing Ancelotti’s side to navigate their way to all three points.

Sevilla welcome Valencia to Estadio Ramon friday night

There is a standout fixture on the opening matchday of the 2023-24 La Liga campaign, with Sevilla welcoming Valencia to Estadio Ramon for what should be a fascinating affair.

Both teams desperately underachieved in La Liga last season, with Sevilla ending the season down in 12th position, while Valencia were 16th, only just surviving relegation to the second tier of Spanish football.

Athletic Bilbao Inaki Williams

Sevilla would have been glad to put a difficult 2022-23 La Liga season behind them, with the team seriously underachieving last term considering their talent, finishing down in 12th spot in the table on 49 points.

Los Nervionenses managed to save their campaign, though, by winning the Europa League, which directly qualified them for the group stage of the 2023-24 Champions League, so they will once again be present in the biggest cup competition in European football.

Sevilla have played eight times during a busy pre-season, and they will enter this match off the back of a 1-1 draw with domestic rivals Atletico Madrid on August 6.

Valencia’s 16th-placed finish in La Liga last season was their worst final spot in Spain’s top flight which is an indication of their problems.

Two of the last three league meetings between these two sides have finished level, while Sevilla are unbeaten against Valencia in Spain’s top light since March 2019, but Sevilla should be winning this type of match at Estadio Ramon considering their quality.

The President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu, (C), and leaders of ECOWAS meet to discuss the political situation in Niger, in Abuja, Nigeria [EPA]

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the activation of its standby military troops to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

The decision of the West African heads of state was announced at the emergency summit held in Nigeria’s Abuja on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

The Thursday meeting discussed responses to the July 26 military takeover in Niger after the coup leaders defied their earlier threat to use force to restore democracy.

The bloc pledged to enforce sanctions and travel bans on those preventing the return to power of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

The ECOWAS chair, Bola Tinubu, President of Nigeria, said in his closing remarks that “No option is taken off the table, including the use of force as a last resort.”

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting Niger in its journey towards peaceful democratic stability,” he said.

“I hope that through our collective effort we can bring about a peaceful resolution as a roadmap to restoring stability and democracy in Niger. All is not lost yet.”

New coronavirus variant EG.5 being tracked -WHO

0
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it is currently tracking coronavirus variant called EG.5.

The WHO upgraded the status of EG.5 from a variant under monitoring to a variant of interest, suggesting that the organization views the variant as one that should be tracked and studied further.

The symptoms of the EG.5 variant do not appear to differ from those of previous strains, which include sore throat, runny nose, cough, upper respiratory infection (URI), and low-grade fevers.

In a risk evaluation report published by the WHO on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, it said EG.5 “remains a more dangerous variant emerging that could cause a sudden increase in cases and deaths.”

EG is a spinoff of the XBB recombinant strain of the Omicron family, and it represents another incremental tweak to the virus.

CNN reports that the new variant is topping the leaderboard in the United States, causing about 17% of new COVID-19 cases, according to the latest estimates from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

EG.5 is also growing quickly in Ireland, France, the UK, Japan, and China.

Dr. David Ho, a professor of microbiology and immunology, has been testing these variants in his lab at Columbia University to see how resistant they have become to the antibodies.

He told CNN that EG.5 and the next most common lineage, XBB.1.16, are only slightly more resistant to neutralizing antibodies in the serum of infected and vaccinated people.

Clinically, he said, these variants do not seem to be causing different or more severe symptoms than the viruses that came before them.

“It basically has some more immune escape compared to the ones that were precedents in this XBB series,” said Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Translational Research Institute. “It has an advantage, which is why it’s getting legs all around the world.”

Confirmed! OSP found $590,000 and GH¢2.73 million cash at Aunty Ceci’s residence

0
Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has indicated that an investigation conducted at the Abelemkpe residence of the former Minister for Sanition, Cecilia Abena Dapaah discovered $590,000 and GH¢2.73 million in cash.

The information was contained in the documents the OSP filed in court as part of processes for approval by the court to freeze the bank accounts of the former Bantama MP.

According to the OSP, it has confiscated the cash discovered during the the investigation on the basis that they were suspected to be tainted property.

The OSP is praying the court to grant the plea to continue to freeze Cecilia Dapaah’s Prudential Bank and Societe Generale bank accounts.

The office explained that the freeze will enable it to conduct further investigation into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences against the minister, and to also prevent the bank accounts from concealment or loss.

The application is expected to be moved at the High Court in Accra on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

Police Intel Exposing Armed Robbers …as sanity returns on Sogakope-Akatsi, Tamale-Bolga roads

0
George Akuffo Dampare, IGP

The Chronicle’s independent investigation has uncovered that the Police Intelligence Department (PID), otherwise referred to as Anti-Robbery Squad, since its establishment and operationalisation sometime last year April, has not only revolutionised police operations but also calmed and sanitised the system.

The investigation, carried across the country, revealed that places which hitherto were inaccessible to the public due to activities of criminals is now a thing of the past.

The presence of members of the squad is a deterrent to the criminal elements.

It was common phenomenon that market women commuting on certain highways in the country could not undertake such trips without armed security escorts.

The Donkorkrom Afram Plains, Akatsi, Sogakope and Diare in the Sevelugu district and the Tamale to Bolgatanga stretches are but a few hot beds for armed gangsters who terrorise motorists transporting peace-loving citizens going about their businesses.

Same cannot be said of today, with the presence of the squad dotted across the regions to pick intelligence on criminal elements before they spring any surprise.

Theirs is to take the fight to the dissidents, which has for now unsettled and rendered their enterprise unattractive, hence the current peace we are enjoying, The Chronicle was told.

No wonder, paramount chiefs and other authorities whose jurisdictions fell to the bandits and are now free from ‘captivity’ can now sigh a huge relief.

The Spear Of The Nation brings activities of the Anti Robbery Squad to the public and it begins with the Volta Region.

The arrest of suspects involved in the robbery and murder of Mandela Zanu, a mobile money vendor at Akatsi on June 20, 2023 and the apprehension of notorious men in the attack at Alive Gas filling station, off the Sogakope-Adidome road, which left one attendant dead, cannot be relegated to the background.

Nabbing of suspects involved in two cases of attacks on Makafui and Sons Lotto Company, the arrest of suspects in narcotic trafficking, who were handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) add to the roll call.

The most recent success by the PID in the region happened to be the surveillance on activities of a fetish priest at Lete Wute, near Tokor in the Ketu South Municipality, who killed a lady from Kasoa for rituals. The victim had visited the priest for spiritual support to enhance her business. These are among the list of achievements by the PID.

In the midst of these, and as expected in human institutions, there are some persons who for whatever reasons hold the view that the unit should not exist.

Meanwhile, the police hierarchy has directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate the source of a correspondence, which is floating around, that certain top ranking persons in the service are involved in some shady deals.

The top hierarchy, according to a dependable source, has also tasked the forensic unit to identify the equipment used in producing the material.

The material is directly attacking the hierarchy of the service, alleging transportation of cannabis in the Volta Region and elsewhere across the country.

Stay tuned.

I’m KEEA NPP’s surest bet: Agyeman Kesie

Mr. Ebenezer Agyeman Kessie

A leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Constituency, Mr. Ebenezer Agyeman Kessie, says he was the surest bet to lead the party as its parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections.

Mr. Agyeman Kessie has, therefore, called on the delegates of the party in the constituency to vote massively for him during the upcoming parliamentary primary in the constituency.

Speaking to delegates after officially submitting his nomination forms last Friday, he indicated that though the NPP government was in power, the constituents of the KEEA had not benefited fully from Nana Addo’s good governance.

This, he said, was due to the fact that the KEEA Constituency currently did not have a Member of Parliament (MP) on the ticket of the ruling NPP, but an opposition MP whose contribution had not brought the needed development.

“The MP position in KEEA has eluded the NPP for quite a long time and this is why I am fully committed to leading the NPP to break the jinx for the party so that all our polling stations executives could be happy,” he said.

He added that: “This is the time we have to come together as a party to win the seat from the NDC. The NPP is the government in power but we in KEEA are regarded as orphan constituency because the MP is not on our side.”

Vision for the Constituency

Mr. Kessie explained that he would prioritise healthcare, education and agriculture to improve the standard of living among the constituents if eventually gets elected as the MP.

He added that since the constituents were predominantly fishers and farmers, he would focus attention on their needs in parliament to draw the government’s attention to them for quick redress that would improve upon their plights.

No squabbles with other aspirants

Mr. Agyeman Kessie explained to his supporters and other delegates who followed him to the party office to file his nomination forms that he did not have any problem or issues with any of the other aspirants.

His focus, he indicated, was to win the primary to become the party’s candidate, so that he could face off squarely with the current MP, Mr. Samuel Atta Mills, who was also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the 2024 elections.

Appeal to supporters

Mr. Agyeman Kessie informed his supporters that the upcoming event was an internal party affair, which required that campaigns were conducted on clean sheets to avoid further divisions after the primary.

“We must, therefore, avoid the use of intemperate words and actions which can break us apart after the internal elections, because we would need the efforts of each and every one to be able to win the seat from the NDC,” he said.

Constituency Secretary’s remarks

The Constituency Secretary, Mr. Francis Ekow Asmah, described the zeal and enthusiasm with which some aspirants had willingly come out to contest as historic and unprecedented.

According to him, a search party was constituted years ago to go round and look for people to come and contest the parliamentary slot on the ticket of the party at the inception of the 4th Republic.

He indicated that unlike the past where it was difficult for the party to find a candidate, about four aspirants have declared their willingness to contest the position.

Secretary Asmah said the level of competition among the aspirants gave him high hopes that the party has gained grounds in the constituency with an impressive stride which has made it more attractive in the constituency.

The Agyingo train and Merrymaking

Prior to the official submission of the nomination forms, scores of his supporters gathered around the Elmina New Market amidst singing, drumming and dancing to brass band music.

Dressed in beautiful white shirts which had the picture of Mr. Ebenezer Agyeman Kessie beautifully embossed, the crowd went through some main streets in Elmina before they finally converged at the party office to support him to file his documents.

After the filing, the crowd in a procession code name “Agyingo train” re-converged at the New Market where the procession begun amidst merrymaking and funfair before they were addressed by Mr. Agyeman Kessie.
