Mystery death of 37-yr-old man shocks Afram Plains residents

0
The innocent 37 year old Eric Ofosu Yeboah aka Kwasi Sika killed by the police

The Kwahu Afram Plains area has been battling highway robberies for about two decades. A number of people had died while others sustained gunshot wounds during some of these robbery attacks.

Many of the victims of these robbers, who operate mainly around Maame Krobo, Tease Ekye Amanfrom and Forifori have also lost their monies and personal belongings.

In his quest to address the challenge, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare upon assumption of office in 2021 deployed the anti-armed robbery squad to the area.

The IGP, who led members of the Police Management Board on September 22, 2021 visited the area to galvanise the support of chiefs and the people to clamp down on the criminals.

Subsequently, the crack team of the counter-terrorism unit of the police, together with the Intelligence team, have done a great work to arrest some of the suspected armed robbers, whilst others have been killed in the process.

However, the killing of 37 year old Eric Ofosu Yeboah, aka Kwasi Sika, a bystander during a counter-terrorism operation by the GPS has created a furore in the town.

The family of the late Kwasi Sika, who was married with two children, have accused the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kwahu Afram Plains, Evans Kyei Ntiri, for the unfortunate incident.

In an interview with The Chronicle, the elder brother of the late Kwasi Sika, Mr. Daniel Asante, narrated that the DCE called the former assembly member for Kwasi Fante, Simon Arko, to organise some youth to assist in apprehending a certain Iliasu Konde, aka Alhaji, who was allegedly on the wanted list of the police.

The elder sibling of late Kwasi Sika continued that, the former Assembly member for Kwasi Fante and the youth in the area were able to apprehend the said Alhaji and the DCE was accordingly informed.

Mr. Daniel Asante indicated that the DCE later arrived at the scene, where the suspect, Alhaji, was handed over to the police but the DCE instructed the security agency to also arrest Eric Ofosu Yeboah (deceased) who was standing by.

The relative of Kwasi Sika told the paper that though the Assemblyman informed the DCE many times that Kwasi Sika was not part of the criminal gang, the DCE did not listen to him (Assemblyman).

He said after a short time, the police announced to the family after a thorough search that their brother and Alhaji were dead and their bodies had been deposited at Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital mortuary.

According to him, the family is finding it difficult to believe that their relative has been killed by the security agencies.

He said the DCE engaged the family in a meeting to announce that the killing was unfortunate because he (Kwasi Sika) was not part of the suspect reported to the police.

The DCE has since called for a meeting to apologise to the family and console them, since it has been established that the late Kwasi Sika was indeed not a criminal.

The DCE confirmed the incident when contacted on his cell phone but politely asked this reporter to contact the Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Christopher Klomegah of the Kwahu Afram Plains South for any further details about the matter.

“Please contact the Divisional Police Commander for further details and if the police need my assistance they will call me”, he added.

The Donkorkrom Divisional Commander also referred this reporter to the national Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service when contacted.

However, all efforts to reach the national PRO have been unsuccessful.

Cracked soles

Do the heels of your feet crack often? Does it feel like your heels are always cracking at the smallest inconvenience, and it is pretty challenging to maintain them? Don’t worry; we’ve got all the information you’ll need about them that can help.

Your heels might be cracking due to a number of different reasons, the dry climate being one. Cracked heels are also referred to as heel fissures. It can be a simple cosmetic problem that feels like a nuance but can lead to serious medical problems as well.

Cracked heels are a common problem faced by many individuals; it is also known as xerosis or dry skin. When the skin around the rim of the heel thickens, it is known as a callus. The symptoms of a cracked heel might be worse if a callus is formed.

Due to age changes, the skin undergoes changes, which causes decreased oil production, decreased thickness and accumulation of sun damage.

If your skin gets repeatedly damaged from too much friction and rubbing or exposure to harsh conditions like dry climate, your heels can get cracked.

Some underlying conditions like atopic dermatitis (itching and inflammation of the skin), nutritional deficiencies, eczema, fungal infection or diabetes.

If you are walking barefoot constantly or wearing open-backed shoes or sandals

If your sweat glands are inactive

If your weight is more than the healthy weight recommendation for your body type1

A cracked heel is a symptom and can occur due to various reasons, as stated above. Some of the features of a cracked heel that will help you identify it is:

The outer edge and bottom of your heel become hard.

The skin of your feet becomes dry and flaky.

You might also experience pain if the fissures are deep, and they can bleed too.1

You can try natural ingredients to care for your heels and get smooth heels. A few home remedies for cracked heels that you can try are listed below. You can try a few of these home remedies, which might be the solution to your question of ‘how to get rid of cracked heels?’.

  1. Washing Feet

This is a pretty straightforward remedy and might just be what you need. It might seem like a small thing, but it can make a world of difference if done correctly. Make sure that you wash your feet with water that’s not too hot or too cold. Use lukewarm water and mild soap to wash your feet.

This can prove to be a good home remedy for a cracked heel. While it’s alright to soak your feet in water for a few minutes before washing them, make sure not to scrub your feet. Soaking feet in water for too long risks weakening the skin barrier, resulting in excessive moisture loss.

  1. Moisturisation

You should moisturise your skin after you wash and dry them properly. You can use mild lotions and creams and apply them generously to your skin and feet. It takes a few minutes for the moisturiser to seep into your skin. So after a few minutes, you should apply a sealant cream or occlusive ointment that seals the moisture in.

  1. Wearing Socks

There is another way that can help you seal the moisture into your feet, i.e. wearing socks. Wearing socks to bed, right after you wash your feet, moisturise and lock the moisture in, can be a good idea.

Even if you’re not interested in wearing socks throughout the day, you can try wearing socks to bed. It can be beneficial for your cracked heel. Wearing cotton socks helps in locking the moisture better and might be one of the easiest home remedies for cracked heels to follow.

Shea butter is obtained from the nut of the African Shea tree. It has been recommended for soothing dry skin caused by dermatitis (inflammation of the skin).

It is also recommended as a moisturiser for hands and feet.3 Therefore, it can be used as one of the home remedies for the cracked heel as well. You can apply it directly onto your cracked heel, or you can dilute it with an oil of your choice before applying it.

  1. Honey

Honey is one ingredient that can be easily found in kitchens across the world. It is being used traditionally to manage multiple skin conditions, cuts and wounds as well. In studies, it was found that honey can also be used to manage skin conditions that can be caused due to faults in the immune system, like atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis.

Therefore, it can also be used as a home remedy for dealing with cracked heels. To use honey, you can directly apply it to your feet, keep it for a few minutes and wash it off.

You can also mix a little bit of rice flour and lemon juice with honey and apply it as a pack to your cracked heels. Washing it off with water might give you smooth heels, and it might prove to be the home remedy that you’ve been looking for.

  1. Kokum Butter

The seed of kokum is used to obtain kokum butter. Kokum butter is widely used for making soaps and lotions. It has the property of moisturising the skin and is used for managing fissures and extremely dry skin. It can be used as a moisturiser for hands and feet. Therefore, it can be used for healing cracked heels.

You can make use of kokum butter directly or use an oil of your choice to dilute it and apply it to your feet as one of the home remedies for cracked heels. You can moisturise your feet with kokum butter and then wear cotton socks to get more benefits.

  1. Olive Oil

Olive oil can also prove to be helpful in healing cracked heels. It is known to have properties such as acceleration of tissue repair and facilitation of removal of dead skin.6 Therefore, olive oil can be used for application on foot.

Direct application of olive oil can be helpful. You can also mix olive oil along with sesame oil and honey for beneficial effects. As this cracked heel remedy combines more than one of the ingredients that help in managing heel cracks, it might be one of the best remedies for cracked heels.

  1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is obtained from the pulp of coconut. It has been extensively used as a moisturiser for mild to moderately dry skin. Thus, it can also be used for cracked heels. It is mineral oil and is safe to use. Coconut oil, especially virgin coconut oil, promotes faster growth of new skin cells, thus promoting the healing of wounds. You can apply either coconut oil or virgin coconut oil onto your heels as a home remedy for a cracked heel.

Feature: Why are they running and why do we vote for them?

0
The Author, Mr Kwadwo Afari

It is rally time. And rally time is the period for unsavoury politicians, bad leaders and con artists.

Of course, all the political parties are in campaign mode and all kinds of people are gearing up and lacing their boots to seek for elective office for one reason or another. And the things they say:

“I am running because my people keep telling me I ought to.”

‘Vote for me because I care’

“Vote for me because it is the time for a Muslim”

‘Vote for me because I am an Akan’

‘Vote for me because it is the turn of the North’

‘Vote for me because I am woman and women have more sympathy’

“I am standing for elections because it is the turn of my people”

‘The economy is in decline and I would solve all the problems and pay the poor’

“The ruling party is ruining the country but I am different. I have the answers and when you vote for me I will save the country”

‘Vote for change. It is time for change. We have a country to save and I am the change you have been waiting for.’

Interestingly, rally time is when we hear candidates for political offices make such statements as they attempt to sway voters to their causes. Sometimes, it is difficult to believe that such supposedly intelligent people could repeat the same double-speak and rhetoric repeatedly. But most of our candidates do that — all the time, ironically, in spite of failures and betrayals.

No! What Ghana need is none of the above reasons for choosing political leaders.

What Ghana needs at this time in our history is a MAN; a WOMAN; a PERSON with the capacity and ability to mobilise Ghanaians behind big projects —– a patriot and a nationalist who want all Ghana to succeed, not a part or a section.

A few of those running because their people kept telling them, really know that their intensions for political office is just for the prestige and money. Their blind ambitions close their eyes to their incompetence and shortcomings. Meanwhile, if incompetence is all we have to worry about the bad nuts that come to us for our votes, then we could count ourselves lucky. It is not that easy — bad leaders are dangerous and a threat to our prosperity.

Sadly, like a bad nut, sometimes when they fail, rejected by the same people at the polls, they end up right where they wanted to be — where their friends told them they should be— appointed to a political office by a winning president.

Some of us are irritated and a bit frustrated by our failure to get good leaders, most of the time. Corrupt leaders obstruct many efforts to improve people’s lives. The whole thing illustrates what is wrong in Ghanaian politics: That a candidate could win an election without articulating any vision or compelling rationale for running for office is a stunning admission that the electorate does not pay attention.

The urgency of the 2024 elections bears down on us.

Ghana today is often characterized as being divided, weakened and with a bad economy. Many believe our political system is so corrupted it cannot be salvaged. But, Ghana needs to be salvaged.

Voters should think about that a bit and decide if they can make any difference. The young men and women who seek political office especially, should be asked the hard questions that might make a difference in the outcome of a race for office?

Elections are games of “Choose Your Own Future”, except there are only two options, and they both end with a belief in ourselves. We need good leaders who are good leaders. We must demand some kind of common-sense reason from those who say, ‘Follow me’.

Voters should not be afraid to ask candidates, “Why?” Voters should insist on answers based on truth, not empty rhetoric. If voters do not make that demand, the fault is theirs. They are guilty for the bad and corrupt political leaders and, dumber too.

The truth is leaders do not have power, the followers do. If we elect bad and weak leaders, we just put weak and bad leaders in office. Winning alone should never be our objective! If we truly want good leaders and better governance, we the electorates should refuse to be seduced by the imagery of false leaders and tricked by demagogues who seek political power only to enrich themselves at our expense.

Young people should just not come and tell us old people should hand over the baton to the youth. We should make them tell us what they intend to do with the baton. Words are not enough. Voters should demand a clear and practical path to the future. Indeed, it is time to make anyone who stands before us, begging for our votes, to answer some hard questions.

We need good leaders to build a prosperous nation. We are not going to get good leaders until we learn that simply showing up to vote is not a true sign of a good citizen. We all need to recognize our roles in the process of nation building and play our part fully, but until we become smarter and demanding voters; we are not getting the prosperous nation we deserve.

In recent times, we hear many people saying they would not vote again in the next elections. That attitude is called voter apathy. Voter apathy is apparent by the low turnout in elections – especially general elections and poses a problem. It is a sign of an unhealthy and politically unmotivated society.

However, while voter apathy may be a problem, voter ignorance is worse. It is dangerous whenever voters come out on Election Day to vote, yet have no real idea of whom or what they are choosing.

A few give a cursory look at the candidates and allow their partisanship to take over and refuse to ask questions. That is the worst kind of apathy. It means motivated, but wilfully ignorant voters always choose our leaders.

We all need to decide what type of leaders we want. Do we want leaders who promise much, but deliver little in a system in which a small number of corrupt leaders exert their power and cultural dominance to silence anyone who disagrees with them?

On the other hand, do we want leaders with integrity, reliability and competence that are ultimately grounded in a spirit of humility?

If we want the latter, it is time we become good followers. It is time to say no to the mob, no to those whose primary goal is not our welfare but access to the power and influence they can use for their own purpose. It is time to understand that most of the time those who come to us for our votes are power-hungry incompetents or worse.

Look, this is not a partisan issue. We are fighting for the prosperity of Ghana. Voting is not a game. Government will not correct itself, and nothing will happen if people think somebody else will take care of it.

Anyone who is tired of voting for change and getting more of the same has a stake in this debate. One thing incompetent and shady politicians cannot stop, and they never count on is a voter who goes to the booth with eyes open.

This is the time of voters to say no more to incompetents.

Kane makes Bayern debut in German Super Cup defeat by Leipzig

0
Harry Kane (centre) made his Bayern debut less than 24 hours after joining

England captain Harry Kane made his Bayern Munich debut as they lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup.

Only hours after completing his £86m move from Tottenham on Saturday, the striker came on as 64th-minute substitute to a huge cheer at the Allianz Arena.

He had only three touches and made little impact.

Dani Olmo scored a hat-trick for Leipzig to deny 30-year-old Kane the first trophy of his career.

Olmo’s first goal was into the bottom corner after a cross was not cleared. His second was brilliant, spinning Matthijs de Ligt before slotting through Sven Ulreich’s legs. The Spain forward got his hat-trick with a penalty after Kane’s introduction.

Leipzig’s performance was especially impressive considering they lost three of their leading players to the Premier League this summer.

Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol joined Manchester City, Hungary midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai went to Liverpool and France striker Christopher Nkunku moved to Chelsea.

Tottenham, Brentford share spoils in entertaining draw

Bryan Mbeumo scored Brentford's first goal of the season from the penalty spot

Tottenham began life after Harry Kane with an entertaining draw against Brentford on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Goals from Christian Romero and Emerson Royal earned new Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou a point on Sunday.

Brentford, who began the league campaign without talisman Ivan Toney, had taken the lead through Yoane Wissa after Bryan Mbeumo’s penalty cancelled out Romero’s opener.

Argentina defender Romero opened the scoring with a guided header from debutant James Maddison’s fierce free-kick. It proved to be Romero’s final contribution as he was replaced by Postecoglou as a precaution after appearing to complain of a knock to the head in the celebration.

The Bees recovered and won a spot-kick when Spurs’ new captain Son Heung-min brought down Mathias Jensen for Mbuemo to convert and stretch his goalscoring run to four consecutive top-flight games.

Wissa was then the beneficiary of Rico Henry’s blistering surge down the left-hand side before side-footing the cutback past Guglielmo Vicario, via a deflection off the boot of Micky van de Ven, to dampen their debuts.

Royal scored the pick of the goals with a guided finish in the fifth minute of 11 added on at the end of a thrilling first half.

Bellingham scores on Real Madrid debut against Athletic Bilbao

Bellingham's goal came 37 minutes into his La Liga debut

Jude Bellingham scored on his competitive Real Madrid debut as they began their La Liga season with victory at Athletic Bilbao.

The 20-year-old got Real’s second when he volleyed in from close range. Rodrygo had opened the scoring with a near-post finish at San Mames.

In an impressive performance, Bellingham caught the eye early in the second half with a run from deep inside his own half, skipping between two Athletic players before racing to the edge of their box.

Real were runners-up in La Liga last season, finishing 10 points behind Barcelona.

“Bellingham is a fantastic kid, he displays quality, personality, he is a hard worker. He is just fantastic,” manager Carlo Ancelotti told Movistar Plus.

Newcastle United in emphatic victory against Aston Villa

Alexander Isak scores for Newcastle

Alexander Isak’s clinical finishing helped Newcastle United to an emphatic victory against Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the new Premier League campaign.

Newcastle tore into the visitors from the early stages at St James’ Park and new signing Sandro Tonali made their dominance count when he converted Anthony Gordon’s inviting sixth-minute cross.

Moussa Diaby cancelled out his fellow debutant’s goal within five minutes, though, beautifully controlling a half volley with his weaker foot after Ollie Watkins’ flick on.

But at the culmination of a frantic opening period Isak regained the lead for the Magpies as he slid home Sven Botman’s cut-back across the box.

Isak delicately chipped Emiliano Martinez for his second to give the home side a two-goal cushion.

Callum Wilson added a fourth following a slick passing move and Harvey Barnes raced clear to score on his competitive debut.

Haaland’s brace helps City open title defence

0
Erling Haaland scores

Erling Haaland was back in the old routine with a devastating display of finishing as Manchester City opened the defence of their Premier League title with a comfortable victory at Burnley.

The goalscoring phenomenon, who hit 52 goals as City won the Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League last season, took only 185 seconds to open his account for the new campaign, striking a blow from which the newly promoted Clarets never recovered.

Haaland pounced in the area when Rodri headed down Kevin de Bruyne’s cross, then curled in a magnificent left-foot strike into the top corner beyond Burnley keeper James Trafford after 36 minutes to effectively end the contest.

Burnley, roared on by a passionate home crowd, never gave up but City’s control grew more emphatic as the game went on, Rodri turning home the third with 15 minutes left after the home defence failed to clear a free-kick.

It all ended very comfortably for City, their night only marred by another injury for De Bruyne, who limped off after only 23 minutes to be replaced by summer signing Mateo Kovacic.

Burnley had Anass Zaroury sent off in injury time, after a the video assistant referee review, for a dangerous lunge on Kyle Walker.

Saka, Nketiah score to give Arsenal perfect start

0
Arsenal scorers Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah

After a disappointing end to last season, Arsenal’s opening weekend win helps them gather more momentum to add to their Community Shield win over Manchester City at Wembley last weekend.

Bukayo Saka’s superb first-half strike helped Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend.

The 21-year-old England forward added to Eddie Nketiah’s 26th minute opener with a curling effort from outside the area that nestled itself into the top left corner of the Forest net, well past the reach of former Gunners keeper Matt Turner.

But last season’s Premier League runners-up had to survive a late charge by Forest after substitute Taiwo Awoniyi clawed a goal back in the 83rd minute.

That was to be a rare attacking threat from the visitors as Arsenal created the majority of chances until Awoniyi helped the visitors roar to life and create a tense finish. Despite the seven minutes of injury time added on, Cooper’s side failed to break down Arsenal’s possession to add a second with Morgan Gibbs-White coming closest, but shooting over while stretching.

Arsenal’s big summer signings Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber all started again for Mikel Arteta.
