Minimum wage: Nigerians will get ‘survival wage’ that can take them home -Abbas

Speaker of the House of Reps, Tajudeen Abbas

Following the ongoing review of the minimum wage by federal lawmakers, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has said Nigerians will get a ‘survival wage’ that could take them home.

Abbas stated this at a National Policy Dialogue on corruption, social norms and behavioural change in Nigeria, organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, and support from the MacArthur Foundation, held at the ICPC’s headquarters in Abuja.

Abbas, who was represented by a member of the House of Representatives, Busayo Oluwole-Oke, representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency said: “We must acknowledge that there are other factors that influence the attitude or action of citizens to indulge in corruption. For instance, the question around a survival wage system is a big factor. A situation where the take home pay of a large segment of the population is unable to take them home is a recipe for all manner of corruption.

“This is why the House of Representatives is particularly interested in the ongoing review of minimum wage in the country. The House this time around will ensure that Nigerians get a survival wage that could take them home”.

Abbas further stated that corruption had impeded the country’s ability to reach its full potential, highlighting many factors that have fuelled corruption in the country.

He said: “Corruption in Nigeria has been fuelled by various factors, including weak governance structures, lack of transparency and accountability, poverty, and cultural acceptance of corrupt practices.

“In many cases, corrupt practices have become normalized within Nigerian society, making it challenging to eradicate them solely through legal means. Therefore, understanding and changing social norms becomes crucial to combating corruption effectively”.

Dr. Festus Awuah Kwofie, the Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira East Constituency has donated 300 bags of cement and 100 double-decker metal beds to second cycle and tertiary schools in the area.

The gesture is his personal contribution towards addressing infrastructural challenges in the education sector in the Dunkwa Municipality of the Central Region.

The beneficiary institutions of the MP’s largesse are Boa Amponsem Senior High School, Dunkwa Senior High Technical School and Dunkwa Nursing and Midwifery Training College.

Dunkwa Senior High Technical School received 100 bags of cement to restore its school building that collapsed recently due to severe rains, while 200 bags of cement went to Dunkwa Nursing and Midwifery Training College towards a dining hall project.

The double-decker metal beds are intended to remedy the deficit in supply of beds in the schools which situation has compelled some students to sleep on the floor.

MP Awuah Kwofie explained that the donation was in fulfilment of his promise to promote education in his constituency.

According to him, poor teaching and learning practices coupled with infrastructural challenges in schools have affected studies.

Mr. Anthony Takyi, the Upper Denkyira East Municipal Director of Education, advised the students to concentrate on their studies, since government is determined to make important investment in their education.

Dr. David Ben Sampson, Principal of the Dunkwa Nursing and Midwifery Training College, on behalf of other beneficiary schools thanked MP Awuah Kwofie for the kind gesture and support.

He promised that the items would be used to serve the purpose for which they were donated.

NGO calls for action to end femicides

Madam Esther Tawiah, Executive Director for GenCED

The Gender Center for Empowering Development, (GENCED) has observed that gradually, Ghana has been slipping deeper into an extreme form of violence against women by their partners, including femicide.

Femicide cases have increased over the years with male partners making up the majority of suspects.

According to media and other reports, 25 women were murdered by abusive partners from January to August 2021. Since then, over one hundred women have been murdered by male partners.

In a statement copied to The Chronicle in Sunyani, the Executive Director of GENCED, Madam Esther Tawiah said, this year alone, a woman has died at least every month in the hands of a man. In most cases, there are other forms of abuse leading up to the murder.

“Unfortunately, no woman is spared with victims from different regions and age groups. Such as Victoria, 42, who was murdered on Friday 23 June, 2023.

She was found dead in her home in Dademantse, which she shared with her husband Seth, 50. Her husband was arrested as the murder suspect and according to him, an argument had ensued between them, leading to his wife’s death”, she said.

The GENCED Executive Director recalled the video of a lady in distress and begging for her life, which appeared online on 21st April, 2023 before she was shot by her boyfriend six times.

She also recalled Abigail Mireku, a form two student at Akyem Nsutam, who was found dead in a barber shop in Fanteakwa East district in the Eastern region.

“These are just but a few names of women who are no longer alive to build a life of their own. The deaths of these women were fortunately documented by media houses but the question is, what of those whose stories weren’t documented?” the statement said.

Madam Tawiah questioned how many of the perpetrators have been prosecuted and what measures have government agencies mandated to protect everyone, including women put in place to address these matters.

GENCED, therefore, demanded action from law enforcers, government agencies such as the office of attorney general and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

She said the ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection needs to spearhead programmes that ensure the safety of women and girls at all times.

“The Inspector General of Police needs to assure the public on what efforts and measures have been put in place to ensure justice is achieved for victims and secondly end such cases”, she said.

Madam Tawiah further said conversation needs to be held with mental health authority on the causes of such cases and how victims’ families can navigate the grief.

According to her, it is time for civil rights organisations, human rights organisations and activists, women rights groups and other non profit organisations to show up for women in their own capacities because every woman deserves to live a full life

The occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled two chiefs in the Ashanti region for misconduct. His Royal Majesty rebuked these erring traditional leaders when he sat in state at the Manhyia Palace.

The chiefs are Nana Osaforo Koto II, who is the chief of Bekwai Abodom and Yaw Duah, the chief of Aduamoa, Kodie.

In a separate video recording of the proceedings, which have been sighted by The Chronicle ,  the Asantehene is heard accusing the Abodom regent of negligence in his seven year rule.

“I gave you Abodom for you to take care of it for me, but you could not do anything in the last seven years of your stewardship so you cannot be the Regent of Abodom,” Otumfuo said in Asante Twi and translated into English by The Chronicle.

Asantehene told the destooled chief that the removal of his native sandals was a testament of the fact that he was no more a chief.

Opemsuo equally asked the Abontedom chief of Abodom not to call himself a chief, since he has failed to give good counsel to the dethroned Abodom Regent.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II chastised the Queen mother of Abodom for failing to follow the right procedure  before enstooling  Nana Osaforo Koto II as a chief.

“If you are given something which does not belong to your ancestors, that is how you go by it,” Opemsuo Osei Tutu II said in Twi

In the case of Nana Yaw Duah, the chief of Aduamoa, Otumfuo accused him of getting himself involved in land matters.

“In all my youthful days, I have been with you and you have taken advantage of this to be swollen headed – Leave the throne.”

Female genital mutilation is not Islamic -Sheikh Ustaz Babalwaiz

Sheikh Ustaz Babalwaiz delivering the keynote address at the colloquium

An Islamic Cleric has observed that harmful practices perpetrated against teenagers, especially early and forced marriage or female genital mutilation, which is practised predominantly in muslim communities are not in line with Islamic teachings or the Quran.

He explained that “attitude is different from religion and most of the harmful practices are based on ones attitude”.

Sheikh Ustaz Burhanu Deen Babalwaiz made these observations in a keynote address at the ‘Inter-Gen Colloquium’, organised by Curious Minds, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), in partnership with UNICEF, at the SSNIT Conference Room last week Thursday, in Kumasi.

The resource persons in a panel discussion

The Inter-Gen Colloquium was under the theme: ‘Building a Better Ghana: Eliminating Harmful Practices for Sustainable Development’. It was aimed at enlightenment, empathy and empowerment so that every individual can exercise their rights with dignity, irrespective of gender and circumstance.

He said some people have paedophile desire for small children or girls, which is attitudinal and not based on any Islamic teaching, emphasising that early and forced marriage was an abomination (Haram) in Islam.

Sheikh Ustaz Babalwaiz, who is also the Deputy Secretary at the Office of the Regional Chief Imam said, the Quran abhors such practices in all forms and that Islam prescribes punishment for offenders of such practices.

The Cleric advised parents to always do their best to train their children from home because leadership starts from childhood, adding that Islam does not stop anyone, especially women, from continuing their education even after marriage.

Police Chief Inspector Eric Asare, at the Legal and Prosecution Unit of the Regional Police Headquarters recommended that victims of defilement or rape should be compensated because parents and relatives of the victims go through a lot during the prosecution of defilement or rape cases.

He explained that rape victims and families would rather prefer to prosecute offenders at the law courts and get compensated if perpetrators are found guilty, rather than settling cases involving domestic violence at home.

Nana Osei Bediako, Dwenedabihene of the Offinso Traditional Council (OTC), stated that the OTC has cautioned all chiefs in the traditional area to desist from any “out of court settlement” on any issue that relate to harmful practices or domestic violence.

The Finance and Operations Manager of Curious Minds, Mr. Prince Kwesi Bonney, lamented that “the persistence of practices such as child and forced marriage, child labour, gender-based violence and female genital mutilation amongst others, cast a shadow upon the fundamental principles of dignity and equality”, which does not “only impede individual progress but also hinder our collective development”.

Mr. Bonney said the colloquium was a beacon of hope and a platform which brought together dedicated hearts including researchers, policymakers, community leaders and advocates “to address these unethical practices that have marred our societal fabric” and find innovative solutions to eliminating same.
