Officials at the Guinness World Records have disclosed why Afua Asantewaa was unsuccessful with her sing-a-thon attempt.

They told Joy FM via mail that Afua could not make the mark because she did not adhere to some of their rules.

“Afua Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon attempt was not successful due to guidelines around rest break timings not being met.

“These rules are standard across all of our ‘longest marathon’ records,” PR Executive for the Guinness World Records, Alina Polianskaya replied to a mail by Joy FM entertainment journalist Kwame Dadzie.

On Friday, February 23, 2024, the Guinness World Records announced that Ghana’s Afua Asantewaa failed to break the longest singing marathon she attempted in December 2023.

The GWR said this in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) adding that despite the setback they hope she makes another attempt.

“We’ve seen how inspirational it has been for her fans. We wish Afua the best of luck with any future record attempts,” they noted.

They added that the money Afua Asantewaa’s team paid for a priority review has been refunded.

Afua Asantewaa in December 2023 took on the challenge to beat the existing record which stands at 105 hours set in 2012.

Asantewaa endured a five-day singing marathon which began at midnight on Sunday, December 24, 2023, and ended at 7:00 am on December 29, 2023.

At the time she ended her record attempt on Friday morning, she had sung for five days, six hours and 55 minutes.

In response to the announcement of her disqualification, Afua wrote on social media that she received the news of the outcome of her sing-a-thon attempt just moments before hosting a gala dinner and the launch of the Lebanese Scholarship Alumni Network, attended by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

She stated, “I would announce my next line of action in a few days. Thank you all for your love and support.”

An attack on a mosque in eastern Burkina Faso killed dozens of Muslims on the same day as another deadly attack on Catholics attending mass, local and security sources have told the AFP news agency.

“Armed individuals attacked a mosque in Natiaboani on Sunday around 5am, resulting in several dozen being killed,” a security source told the AFP on Monday.

“The victims were all Muslims, most of them men” who had come for morning prayers, a local resident said by telephone.

Another local source said, “The terrorists entered the town early morning. They surrounded the mosque and shot at the faithful, who were gathered there for the first prayer of the day. Several of them were shot, including an important religious leader.”

Soldiers and members of the Volunteers for the Defence of the Fatherland (VDP), a civilian force that supports the military, were also targeted “by these hordes who came in large numbers”, the source said.

The source described it as a “large-scale attack” in terms of the number of assailants, who also wreaked substantial damage. The authorities are yet to comment on the attack.

Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny was close to being freed in a prisoner swap before his sudden death, according to his ally Maria Pevchikh.

In a video posted to YouTube on Monday, Pevchikh claimed the planned swap involved exchanging Navalny and two unnamed US nationals for Vadim Krasikov, a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) assassin in Germany.

Navalny, an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died at 47 in an Artic penal colony, where he was serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges when he reportedly collapsed after a walk on the prison grounds.

“Alexey Navalny could be sitting in this seat right now, right today. That’s not a figure of speech, it could and should have happened,” said Pevchikh.

A German spokesperson told a press conference on Monday that the government was aware of the reports of an alleged swap, but could not comment on them.

Japan Moon lander survives lunar night

Jaxa produced this render of Slim to show the awkward landing orientation

Japan’s Moon lander has survived the harsh lunar night, the sunless and freezing equivalent to two Earth weeks. “Last night, a command was sent to #SLIM and a response received,” national space agency Jaxa said on X. The craft was put into sleep mode after an awkward landing in January left its solar panels facing the wrong way and unable to generate power.

A change in sunlight direction later allowed it to send pictures back but it shut down again as lunar night fell. Jaxa said at the time that Slim (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) was not designed for the harsh lunar nights. It said it planned to try to operate again from mid-February, when the Sun would shine again on Slim’s solar cells.

Dr Barber explained that Slim landed near the Moon’s equator, where the lunar surface reaches more than 100C at noon, but then plunges to -130C during the lunar night.

Jaxa said that communication with the lander was terminated after a short time – it was lunar midday, meaning the temperature of the communications equipment was very high.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Jomoro, Dorcas Afo-Toffey, has given hope to the family of a six-year-old boy suffering from Hyposdadias at Half-Assini.

When all hope seemed lost by the family of the innocent child, given the severity of the ailment, the Legislator extended her benevolence to them by taking up the medical cost of the ailment.

Hypospadias is a medical condition where the penis and the scrotum are fused together.

This act of generosity evidently has taken the financial burden off the family.

Both the boys family and the MP representtaive at the boys house to offer the cheque

For now, what the family must do is to prioritise the child’s recovery and well-being without the added pressure of having to look for money to cater for the medical cost.

The Chronicle understands that the financial support being extended to the family by the Legislator has given them hope that the child will survive.

The latest intervention by the MP brings up to 350, the number of people who have been supported the Jomoro Legislator in her constituency.

A representative of the family, Matthew Aduko Ackah, saw it as a dream when the rep of the MP, Fidelis Somiah, presented the cheque covering the medical expenses of the boy to him. According to him, he never thought that the MP would come to their aid though the ailment the boy is suffering is known to everyone at Hlaf-Assini.

To Aduko Ackah, what the MP had done demonstrated her love, care and as a family “we are short of words to describe MP’s gesture”.

Fidelis Somiah, a representative of the MP told the family the gesture exemplified the MP’s unwavering commitment to serving her constituents and easing the financial struggles of those in need.

The presentation was led by Fidelis Somiah, an assistant to the MP, accompanied by David Somiah, the constituency director of elections, Grandpere, constituency deputy Organiser and Miss Patricia Enstuah, deputy constituency Treasurer.

The Washington police department is investigating the incident

A US airman has died after setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC. The man was identified by police as Aaron Bushnell, 25, of San Antonio, Texas.

Officers from the US Secret Service extinguished the flames before the man was taken to hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Before setting himself on fire, he said he would “no longer be complicit in genocide”.

In a video aired live on a streaming site, Twitch, the man identified himself and said he was a serving member of the Air Force.

The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington said that it was “not confirming the authenticity of the video”.

No embassy staff members were injured in the incident, said a spokeswoman for the embassy.

The incident happened at 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) on Sunday.

A bomb disposal unit was sent to the site over concerns about a suspicious vehicle that could have been connected to the individual.

This was later declared safe after no hazardous materials were found.

Palestinian Prime Minister resigns over Gaza ‘genocide’

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has announced the resignation of his government, which rules parts of the occupied West Bank, due to the escalating violence in the occupied territory and the war on Gaza.

“The decision to resign came in light of the unprecedented escalation in the West Bank and Jerusalem and the war, genocide and starvation in the Gaza Strip,” said Shtayyeh, who submitted his resignation to Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday.

“I see that the next stage and its challenges require new governmental and political arrangements that take into account the new reality in Gaza and the need for a Palestinian-Palestinian consensus based on Palestinian unity and the extension of unity of authority over the land of Palestine,” he said.

Shtayyeh’s comments come as US pressure grows on Abbas to shake up the PA and begin work on a political structure that can govern a Palestinian state following the war.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has on numerous occasions rejected calls for the PA under Abbas to take control of a Palestinian state and govern Gaza.

Last week, Israeli lawmakers backed Netanyahu’s rejection of any “unilateral” recognition of a Palestinian state.

From burnt toast, to sweeteners and mobile phones …the biggest cancer myths debunked

0

Claims that eating burnt toast and keeping your phone in your pocket will lead to cancer have circulated for years.

But what’s the truth?

To help you separate fact from fiction, MailOnline debunks five of the biggest myths surrounding what causes cancer

Mobile phones

For decades, rumours have spread that electromagnetic radiation or waves from mobile phones can cause cancer.

But researchers say there is no good evidence that this is the case, despite many fearing that keeping their phone close to their body will put them at risk.

Mobiles work by sending and receiving electromagnetic waves to and from phone masts.

While high energy radiation can cause cancer by damaging DNA, the version emitted by phones is so weak that it does not have this effect, says Cancer Research UK.

The charity adds that although 4G and 5G networks rely on higher frequency radio waves to work in comparison to phones made a decade ago, it’s still not enough energy to damage DNA.

But, because the technology is still relatively new, scientists continue to monitor research in this field to track any potential long-term effects.

Burnt toast

Scraping off the burnt bits from your toast won’t save you from cancer, experts say.

Burnt toast, charred root vegetables and roast potatoes all contain a chemical called acrylamide, which occurs naturally in foods that have been cooked at high temperature for a long time.

Some studies have linked the substance to cancer.

However, Cancer Research UK says the evidence isn’t strong enough that food that’s been baked, barbequed, fried, grilled, toasted or roasted raise the risk of cancer.

Stress

It’s been noted in studies that some women wonder whether stress caused their breast cancer.

But the evidence for this is poor.

A large study of more than 100,000 women in the UK in 2016 did not show any consistent evidence that linked stress to breast cancer.

Another 2013 analysis, which looked at 12 studies involving more than 100,000 people who were followed up for several years, did not find a link between stress at work and colorectal, lung, breast or prostate cancers.

However, a separate paper in 2022 suggested there could be a connection between the body’s exposure to cortisol, the stress hormone, and cancer.

And another study this week suggested that being stressed out causes cancers to grow and spread.

Although stress hasn’t been directly linked to the disease, long periods of stress have been linked to high blood pressure and depression, according to the NHS.

It can also be harder to maintain a healthy lifestyle, such as not smoking and drinking, during stressful situations. These habits can lead to an increased cancer risk, warns Cancer Research UK.

But the agency insists ‘no evidence’ shows ‘those who are more stressed are more likely to get cancer’.

Artificial sweeteners

Diet fizzy drinks, chewing gum and toothpaste, along with hundreds of other products, contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

There is some evidence that aspartame, which has been used in products since the 80s, can cause cancer.

It led the World Health Organization to class the sweetener as ‘possibly carcinogenic to humans’ in June 2023.

However, experts say people would have to consume it in extremely large quantities — more than a dozen cans a day — for it to have this effect and criticised the UN health agency for causing unnecessary mass panic.

Cancer Research UK agrees that there is ‘no convincing evidence that artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, cause cancer’.

Drinking from a plastic bottle

Plastic water bottles, lunch boxes and food packaging has long been feared to contain cancer-causing chemicals. Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is a chemical found in plastic bottles and containers that is thought to leach into food and drink and disrupt hormones.

As a result, it has been heavily linked to — but not proven to cause — a range of health issues including reproductive health problems, diabetes and obesity.

One 2015 review by researchers in the US of the carcinogenic properties in BPA recommended it should be classified as a cancer risk for humans.

Although studies have shown the chemical has cancer-causing effects, these experiments have involved human cells in a lab or animals.

This is very different to how people would come into contact with these chemicals in real life, warns Cancer Research UK.
