Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee of Mines and Energy says SML must be given a standing ovation for its state-of-the-art installations to track the movement of petroleum products at the various tank farms across the country.

Yaa Serwaah Sarpong addressed the media

On Monday, a section of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, led by the chairman, visited Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), pioneers in petroleum audit and assurance in Ghana’s downstream industry, to familiarise themselves with their operations.

With cutting-edge Electronic Metering Management Systems (EMMS) technology and an innovative system that combines hardware to revolutionise audit practices.

SML, since 2017, has been a significant partner to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to achieve its revenue mobilisation targets.

After the guests had been walked through the operations at SML and how the check meters of the host can expose any shady oil lifting at a depot, Mr Atta Akyea, after expressing his satisfaction with the operations at SML, cautioned the public against running commentaries on issues they have no idea on.

The South Abuakwa MP added: “From an informed position, though I don’t want to prejudice the work of the Jubilee House, I believe that this is a world-class installation.
“SML has come to expose something very huge and I think they have given the whole nation some rest and the GRA can attest to that.

“Those who have no clue as to what this company is doing or have no facts as to what happens here, should not do propaganda at the least opportunity.”

Yaa Serwaah Sarpong, Director of Special Support Services to SML, on her part, said the company, since it partnered with the GRA, has helped the GRA to double its revenue from downstream petroleum.

Yaa Sarpong said the technology at SML has helped Ghana to rake in GH¢12 billion after being able to push and sustain the average taxable volume from 240-250 million litres, when GRA partnered with it, to 450 million litres of petroleum products.

“When we came in the downstream petroleum, the average taxable volume was between 240 and 250, but we have doubled that volume based on the controls we have put in place to audit and assure revenue in the downstream petroleum. It is unprecedented based on the technology SML is using in Ghana,” she noted.

She added: “So, our performance has been remarkable and unprecedented and GRA has already said this.
“We have been able to show our MPs what we do and how we come about what we do. And we are confident that they were impressed with our operations,” Yaa Serwaah Sarpong noted.

The Jospong Group of Companies (JCG) has entered into agreement with the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to build waste treatment plants in Lagos, Nigeria.

The integrated waste treatment facility will help to transform the environmental situation of Africa’s most populous city. The landmark agreement was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Jospong Group of Companies, led by its Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong and the Honourable Commissioner of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, in Lagos on Monday, February 26, 2024.

The Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, in a remark assured that JCG is in Nigeria to help the State and also share knowledge and expertise in waste management and treatment.

“We have learned a lot of lessons from Ghana and we are here to share our technical and operational expertise to help improve the sanitation landscape of Lagos State,” he emphasised.

The Executive Chairman also assured the upstream operators (collectors) of Lagos that the company will partner and collaborate with them, as well as support them with equipment to make their work much more effective and efficient.

The Lagos State Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, noted that by the agreement Lagos State is showcasing its commitment to a crucial aspect of environmental services through a Public Private Partnership arrangement.

“We are utilising a PPP arrangement to address our waste management challenges effectively,” he stated.

He noted that the arrangement also includes exploring ways to convert its waste into valuable resources.

“Our goal is a cleaner, greener and prosperous Lagos. And we are fostering a conducive environment for the private sector to strive,” he stated.

He was of the view that Lagos State must find value in its waste instead of wasting it.

The Consul General of the Ghana Consulate in Lagos, HE Hajia Samata Gifty Bukari, assured the partners, Jospong Group and the Lagos State Environment and Water Resources of her support to ensure the success of the partnership.

Per the MoU, Jospong Group will establish a Material Recovery Facility, Mobile Transfer loading stations, Repurposing of current Olusosun landfill, Supply of self-tipping tricycles and Bin manufacturing and plastic recycling plant to streamline recyclable activities.

Additionally, this proposed well proven sustainable solution to environmental sanitation will go a long way to boost Nigeria’s carbon ratings to enable it raise needed funds to build more sustainable infrastructure.

According to a report by the Lagos State Waste Management Agency, Lagos State produces approximately 13,000 tons of waste per day.

The consequences of poor sanitation are dire, ranging from the spread of waterborne diseases to environmental degradation, and disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable segments of our society, including women, children and the elderly.

In Ghana, JCG has established 58 sustainable sanitation infrastructures for liquid, medical, plastics and municipal solid waste, including 16 integrated recycling and compost plants.

These plants produce compost which is also helping to boost the agricultural sector of the economy.

The Jospong Group delegation, included the Executive Director of the Processing Cluster of the Jospong Group, Mr Haidar Saed, advisory Board Members of Group, Madam Gifty Boi-Bi-Boi, Mr. Emmanuel Otchere Okomeng, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer-JCG, Madam Sophia Kudjordji and head of legal, Madam Gloria Boafo among others.

Nigerian record label Mavin Records, owned by Don Jazzy has been acquired by the music industry giant Universal Music Group (UMG).

This move further strengthens UMG’s presence in the rapidly growing Afrobeats scene.

The deal, expected to be finalised by the end of the third quarter of 2024, will see UMG acquire a majority stake in Mavin Global, while founder Don Jazzy and his team retain leadership of the label.

Financial details remain undisclosed, but previous reports estimated Mavin’s value to be well over $125 million. This strategic alliance signifies UMG’s recognition of Mavin’s role in propelling Afrobeats onto the global stage.

Mavin artists like Rema have achieved massive success, with his song “Calm Down” becoming the most popular Afrobeats track ever, even reaching the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

This partnership paves the way for even greater international exposure and development for Mavin’s artists.

By combining UMG’s global network with Mavin’s established expertise in Afrobeats, both parties stand to benefit significantly from this collaboration.

Tyler Perry halts $800 film studio build over AI fears

Renowned US film and TV giant Tyler Perry has revealed that he is putting a $800m (£630m) expansion of his studio on hold after becoming concerned over new AI technology.

He was due to add 12 sound stages to his Atlanta complex, but says he has been put off by the release of OpenAI’s video generator Sora.

Perry, 54, believes “a lot of jobs” will be lost in the film industry because of artificial intelligence.

He told the Hollywood Reporter that Sora had “shocking” capabilities.

“All of that [work] is currently and indefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I’m seeing,” he said.

“I had gotten word over the last year or so that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it’s able to do. It’s shocking to me.”

The tool, which has been made by the company behind Chat GPT, was launched in a limited way earlier this month and is not yet open to public consumption.

OpenAI’s CEO took requests from followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, and produced videos with their suggestions to show its capabilities.

With access to a few resources and a couple of text prompts, it was able to produce lifelike footage up to one minute long.

Perry said the technology could make travelling to locations and building sets redundant: “I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me,” he said.

He added that he was “very, very concerned” that this could mean jobs for actors, editors, sound specialists and transporters could be lost.

Perry, who has starred in films such as Don’t Look Up and Gone Girl, did say however that he had recently used AI on set to make himself older for a scene, which meant he “avoided having to sit through hours of aging makeup”.

AI is already on the minds of many in the industry and was one of the main sticking points during the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

Many writers were concerned about their jobs being taken by AI, whilst actors were concerned that the technology could be used to replace them on set.

Despite an agreement being reached between studios and Hollywood workers, Perry said the “whole industry” needs to come together to protect people’s livelihoods.

“It can’t be one union fighting every contract every two or three years. I think that it has to be everybody, all involved in how do we protect the future of our industry because it is changing rapidly, right before our eyes,” he said.

A controversial Nigerian public figure, Olukemi Olunloyo, has given a general profile of the category of people implicated in a romance scam involving Mona Faiz Montrage, alias Hajia4Reall.

Olunloyo, who identifies as a former investigative journalist, cited her sources within the American security establishment as projecting that Mona will bag a three-year sentence out of the possible five-year maximum.

According to her, the reduced sentence is due to crucial information that she gave to investigators, which included naming some of her accomplices back home in Ghana.

“She did a good plea deal as she has snitched. Remember I told you last year she vows Ghana will “shake.”

“One is a popular musician. One is a famous actor. One is a big big politician. One is a very big businessman in the hospitality industry. All Ghanaian,” she wrote in a Facebook postdated February 22.

She said the names of the quartet have been disclosed to her but she was not in a position to share as it remained confidential.

Hajia4Reall, a social media influencer cum musician, agreed to forfeit over US$2.1 million and restitute same to authorities in the United States as part of a guilty plea she entered in a romance scam case which started actively with her arrest and extradition from the United Kingdom in 2023.

Montrage pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to receive stolen money and per US laws, faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

A sentencing date has yet to be released by the authorities.

Read Kemi Olunloyo’s full post below:

“My FBI guy in the Hushpuppi and Woodberry case told me today that Mona will likely get 3 years in prison. She’s facing 5 years. Why? She did a good plea deal as she has snitched. Remember I told you last year she vows Ghana will “shake”

One is a popular musician

One is a famous actor

One is a big big politician

One is a very big businessman in the hospitality industry. All Ghanaian????????

Nothing shocks me anymore when I heard the names. Can’t tell you as it’s confidential and I’m no longer in journalism. I’m doing a documentary on her as well. Stay tuned Kemi Talks on YouTube

Pakistani journalist and video blogger Asad Ali Toor

Pakistani journalist and video blogger Asad Ali Toor was arrested by federal authorities on Monday on charges of orchestrating a malicious campaign against the state and its officials, with the “objective to coerce, intimidate, and incite violence” against them through his social media platforms.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) detained Toor for more than eight hours two days earlier, during which he was questioned on the same charges, according to his lawyers.

Imaan Mazari-Hazir, the counsel representing Toor, said that her client was brought to a court in Islamabad on Tuesday morning and was subsequently sent to custody for five days.

“The FIA asked for a 10-day remand, but the court limited it to five days. We will try to gain as much access to him during this period as is possible,” she said.

Mazari-Hazir said that her client was cooperating fully with law enforcement officials. “He appeared before the FIA on February 23, even when he had not been duly served a notice to show his good faith. He was detained for eight hours. But he was sent another notice within 24 hours to appear on Monday,” she told Al Jazeera.

Elon Musk eats humble pie over unpaid bakery bill

Elon Musk

Elon Musk has stepped in to foot the bill for 4,000 mini pies after his firm cancelled an order at the last minute. Giving Pies bakery in San Francisco was left $2,000 (£1,500) out of pocket when Tesla backed out just before delivery. But when the small business took to social media to complain, Mr Musk said he would stump up the dough.

He even had Tesla place a new order – but the bakery said it was now so flooded with business from well-wishers it was too busy to take it on.

“It’s incredible, I’m blown away,” Voahangy Rasetarinera, the owner of the San Jose bakery, told NBC.

“I’m so grateful, it’s amazing, people are amazing.”

Her response came after Mr Musk took to social media to resolve the dispute.

“Just hearing about this,” he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, responding to a local news story about Tesla cancelling the order.

“Will make things good with the bakery. People should always be able to count on Tesla trying its best.”

Prince William pulls out of memorial service due to ‘personal matter’

Prince William

Prince William unexpectedly pulled out of attending the memorial service for the late former King Constantine of Greece, where he had been due to give a reading.

Kensington Palace said this was because of a “personal matter”.

Queen Camilla led members of the Royal Family at the service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

The King, who is being treated for cancer, was also unable to attend the service.

There are no further details of the “personal matter” that kept the Prince of Wales from being there on Tuesday morning, but royal sources have indicated there is no cause for alarm. Prince William’s wife Catherine, who is recovering from abdominal surgery carried out last month, is continuing to do well, says Kensington Palace.

The Prince of Wales called the Greek royal family this morning to say he would not be able to join them. With this year’s succession of royal medical stories, including Catherine’s operation, and the King’s prostate procedure and then cancer diagnosis, there has been much public interest in their health.

NATO denies plans to send troops to Ukraine

0
NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg

NATO’s secretary-general has said there are no plans to send troops to Ukraine, as Russia claimed it was ready to enter a direct conflict with the Western military alliance should it put boots on the ground.

Responding to remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron the previous day, Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday denied that NATO countries were considering the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.

There are “no plans for NATO combat troops on the ground in Ukraine”, the NATO chief said.

Macron told a meeting of European leaders on Monday that while “there’s no consensus today to send in an official, endorsed manner troops on the ground … nothing can be ruled out”.

Russia was quick to leap upon the French leader’s comments. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called Macron’s suggestion that Western states could send ground troops to Ukraine “a very important new element”.

While ruling out NATO military action, Stoltenberg again insisted that the alliance would continue to support Kyiv strongly.
