Reggae Dancehall Artiste, Stonebwoy has bemoaned Ghana’s unsuccessfulness in signing a deal to become a founding member of the recently announced Grammys Africa initiative.

According to him, Ghana being a founding member of this imperative initiative will provide great benefits and economic potentials for the Growth and expansion of Ghana’s creative industry.

The Artiste of the Year for the 25th TGMA in a tweet questioned Ghana’s inability to become a founding member.

He further expressed gratitude to Dentaa Amoateng and others for their support in providing such an opportunity for Ghana.

Stonebwoy wondered how it was impossible for Ghana to raise funds to pay and seal its service agreement to be part of the crucial initiative with potential expansion of Ghana’s creative.

“The Governments of Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa have all Paid and sealed their service agreements to become founding members.

“The big question is WHY NOT GHANA?? CAN GOV’T NOT RAISE THE MONEY?? CAN GOV’T ASK PRIVATE SEC TO HELP RAISE THE MONEY?? IS IT NOT IMPORTANT BE A PART OF THIS?” he tweeted on Friday, June 28.

Earlier in June, Senior consultant to the President and CEO of the Recording Academy (Grammys), Akosua Dentaa Amoateng disclosed that Ghana is currently not among the African nations listed as the founding members for the Grammy Africa initiative.

French election candidates withdraw in bid to block far right

0
The first round of the elections produced hundreds of three-way run-off races

French voters are waiting to see the full line-up for the second round of parliamentary elections, as scores of candidates stood aside in order to help defeat the far-right National Rally (RN).

Parties have until 18:00 (17:00 BST) Tuesday evening to register contenders for Sunday.

Only then will it be clear how many from the left and centre have abandoned the race in the hope of unifying the anti-RN vote.

Last Sunday’s first round produced a big victory for the party of Marine Le Pen, which – with allies – won around 33% of the vote.

A broad left-wing alliance came second, and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrists third.

But Ms Le Pen’s chances of winning an outright majority in the 577-seat National Assembly have been dented by the blocking tactics of her party’s enemies.

In more than half of constituencies – around 300 – three candidates qualified from the first round of voting (nearly everywhere else it was just two).

If in these constituencies one of the two non-RN runners stands aside, this increases the chances of the RN candidate being defeated.

By midday Tuesday around 200 candidates from the left and centre were understood to have taken the step.

The left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) – which comprises everyone from centre-left social democrats to far-left anti-capitalists – issued instructions to all of its third-placed candidates to step down and let a centrist reap the anti-RN vote.

Dozens killed in crush at India religious event

Dozens were killed in the crush

More than 50 people have been killed in a crush at a religious gathering in northern India, officials have said.

The incident took place at a satsang (a Hindu religious event) in Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh state.

“A figure of nearly 50-60 deaths has been reported to me by doctors,” district magistrate of Hathras Ashish Kumar said.

The victims, including a large number of women and some children, are still being identified.

Survivors have described how the disaster unfolded as they tried to leave the event in Mughalgarhi village.

An eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, told the BBC everything was “going fine”, until “all of a sudden I heard screams and before I knew it, people were falling on each other”.

“Many were crushed and I couldn’t do much. I am just lucky to have survived.”

“When the sermon finished, everyone started running out,” a woman named only as Shakuntala told the Press Trust of India news agency.

“People fell in a drain by the road. They started falling one on top of the other and got crushed to death.”

Umesh Kumar Tripathi, chief medical officer from the neighbouring district of Etah, told reporters the “stampede” had left at least three children dead.

Distressing images from the site are being circulated online. Some videos showed the injured being taken to hospitals in pick-up trucks, tuk tuks and even motorbikes.

A clip seen by the BBC showed several bodies left at the entrance of a local hospital as relatives screamed for help. In Hathras, the screams of distraught family members can be heard in the local hospital.

Palestinians flee Khan Younis as Israeli forces strike south Gaza

Around 250,000 people are affected by the Israeli evacuation orders

The UN says 250,000 Palestinians in southern Gaza have been affected by evacuation orders from the Israeli military.

Many people have been fleeing areas in and around the second city of Khan Younis on foot and by car.

Patients and medical staff have also been leaving a major hospital in the area, although the military said they were not subject to an evacuation order.

Gazan health officials say eight Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded during overnight Israeli strikes.

Louise Wateridge, an official with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) in Gaza, asked where people could go as they were forced to leave their homes once again.

“In this area, people were already forced to survive in severely damaged, destroyed, structurally unsafe buildings after the Rafah military operation,” she said.

Once again on the move – huddled on carts, motorbikes and pickup trucks – thousands of Palestinians have been fleeing towns and villages to the east of Khan Younis.

After issuing evacuation orders on Monday evening, the Israeli military mounted strikes overnight on the area from which it says around 20 projectiles were fired into Israel on Monday morning – the biggest such barrage for months.

The military said it hit targets including a weapons storage facility and operational centres of Palestinian armed groups.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said that eight people were killed and more than 30 wounded.

The armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad said it carried out the rocket attack on Monday, but the military again accused Hamas of continuing to “systematically violate international law while using civilian infrastructure and the civilian population as human shields”.

Among those fleeing a possible Israeli ground assault were patients and medical staff at the city’s European Gaza hospital, which is now all but deserted.

Biden says court ruling on Trump undermines rule of law

0
President Joe Biden

Joe Biden has described as a “dangerous precedent” a Supreme Court ruling giving former President Donald Trump partial immunity from criminal prosecution.

The current US president said the judgement undermined the “rule of law” and was “a terrible disservice” to Americans.

Earlier, Trump hailed the court’s decision as a “big win” for democracy.

The justices found on Monday that a president had immunity for “official acts” but was not immune for “unofficial acts”, and referred the matter back to a trial judge.

The judgement will further delay the criminal case against Trump for allegedly trying to subvert the 2020 election result that gave victory to Mr Biden.

The trial judge must now determine which actions were carried out in Trump’s capacity as president, which could take months. Any trial is unlikely to start before November’s presidential election. In a televised statement late on Monday, President Biden said: “This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America. Each of us is equal before the law. No one, no one is above the law. Not even the president of the United States.

“Today’s [court] decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what a president may do.

“The man who sent that mob to the US Capitol is facing potential criminal conviction for what happened that day. The American people deserve to have an answer in the courts before the upcoming election.”

Mr Biden was referring to Trump being on trial for his alleged role in stirring up the riot.

Essential benefits of Aloe Vera

0
Aloe Vera

What Is Aloe Vera?

Aloe vera is a medicinal plant that grows in hot climates such as California, New Mexico, and the Caribbean. It contains more than 75 active ingredients, including enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, some of which could make it useful for treating diseases.

Some people use aloe vera gel as a home remedy to treat burns and other skin conditions and heal wounds. Aloe juice is also promoted as a natural remedy for diabetes, heartburn, and inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS). There is some research suggesting that it works for these and other conditions, but more research and higher-quality studies are needed to confirm these benefits.

Aloe Vera Benefits

Aloe vera comes as a gel that you can apply to your skin and as a juice or gel that you can drink. The leaf also contains a yellow liquid called aloe latex.

This plant-based remedy contains chemicals that reduce swelling in the skin, relieve redness and scaling, soothe itchy skin, and promote the growth of new skin cells. These properties make aloe vera useful for treating skin conditions such as:

  • Acne
  • Cold sores (herpes)
  • Cuts and scrapes
  • Insect bites and stings
  • Minor burns and sunburn
  • Psoriasis

When taken by mouth, aloe vera may help lower cholesterol and blood sugar and ease heartburn.

Aloe vera for acne

Pimples form when oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria clog up hair follicles, which then get inflamed and form small bumps. Aloe vera has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that might help with acne, but there hasn’t been enough research to confirm that it works. In one of the few studies that exist, the combination of aloe vera gel and the acne medicine tretinoin improved breakouts more than tretinoin alone, and with fewer side effects.

Aloe vera for burns

Aloe vera’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects make it useful for treating burns. Applying a layer of aloe vera to minor burns and sunburned skin might help the skin heal faster, and reduce redness, itching, and pain, research finds. Aloe also helps prevent burns from getting infected.

Aloe vera gel feels soothing on sunburned skin. It moisturizes while it heals, which may prevent you from peeling as much.

Aloe vera and cholesterol

This plant extract might help lower levels of unhealthy low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and fats called triglycerides while boosting heart-healthy high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Researchers think aloe vera works by reducing the amount of cholesterol that the intestines absorb.

Aloe vera for constipation

Aloe vera juice and aloe latex are promoted as a treatment for constipation. Aloe contains substances (such as barbaloin) that act as laxatives. Barbaloin increases the amount of water in the intestine, which could make poop easier to pass and help digested foods move more easily through the intestines.

Aloe juice and latex used to be in over-the-counter constipation drugs. But because aloe can cause painful cramps and other side effects, the FDA does not consider it safe to use as a laxative.

Aloe vera and diabetes

Some studies show that aloe vera juice may help lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes and prediabetes. Researchers say substances in aloe vera repair damaged cells in the pancreas that make insulin — the hormone that helps control blood sugar levels. Aloe might also lower blood sugar by helping the body’s cells respond better to insulin.

Some studies haven’t shown any effects of aloe vera on blood sugar. Plus the studies done so far have used different types and doses of aloe. Experts say we need more research to confirm whether aloe vera improves blood sugar control in people with diabetes.

Aloe vera for heartburn

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a painful condition where stomach acid travels up the esophagus and causes heartburn. Aloe vera may help with reflux by lowering inflammation in the esophagus and reducing stomach acid. One early study suggested that aloe vera syrup worked as well as reflux medications such as ranitidine (Zantac) and omeprazole (Prilosec) but with fewer side effects.

Murray out of Wimbledon singles but will play doubles

0
Andy Murray was aiming to make his 16th appearance in the Wimbledon singles

Andy Murray has decided not to play in the Wimbledon singles, instead making his farewell to the All England Club in the doubles alongside older brother Jamie.

Murray, who is planning to retire later this year, had surgery 10 days ago on a back issue.

The 37-year-old, who won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, was due to play Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic on Centre Court on Tuesday.

Former world number one Murray had a cyst close to his spinal cord removed because it was causing nerve pain in his right leg.

Speaking a few hours after his withdrawal was announced, Murray said: “I wanted to sleep on it, make sure I was happy with the decision and give myself the chance when I woke up to see if it felt much better.

“I ran around a bit at home this morning when I got up – it wasn’t where I wanted it to be unfortunately.

“It’s probably a few days too soon but I’m proud I worked extremely hard to give myself a chance to play. It’s the right decision.”

Wimbledon organisers said they were “sorry to hear” Murray was not playing in the singles.

“We are so looking forward to seeing you compete in the doubles and celebrating all the memories you have given us,” a statement added.

The Murray brothers, who have never teamed up at the Championships, will play Australian pair Rinky Hijikata and John Peers later this week.

The first round of the men’s doubles is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, but Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton said the Murrays could even play on Friday.

“I think it is likely to be Thursday but depends on conditions. I’m not 100% sure,” Andy Murray added. Credit: bbc.com

Wimbledon defending champion Vondrousova suffers shock first-round exit

0
Marketa Vondrousova's Wimbledon title defence ends

Marketa Vondrousova’s Wimbledon title defence came to an early end as she fell to a surprise first-round defeat by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

The Czech became the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles trophy when she triumphed against Ons Jabeur in last year’s final.

But Vondrousova’s game was riddled with unforced errors and double faults as the 25-year-old opened proceedings with a lacklustre performance on Centre Court.

World number 83 Bouzas Maneiro, 21, took advantage on Tuesday to win 6-4 6-2 for her first Grand Slam victory.

It is the first time since 1994, when Steffi Graf lost to Lori McNeil, that the women’s defending champion has lost in the first round at Wimbledon.

“I am really happy, I think this is one of the most important moments in my life, in my career,” said Bouzas Maneiro.

“This is the most beautiful tournament I have played in my life so thank you to everyone who came to watch the match today.”

Vondrousova’s early exit means there will be a different women’s singles champion for a seventh consecutive year.

Serena Williams was the last player to successfully defend the Venus Rosewater Dish, winning back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016.
