The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, his family and some senior members of the Manhyia palace yesterday received jabs of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19, when the exercise started in Ashanti Region yesterday.

His vaccination marked the start of the two-week COVID-19 vaccination exercise in the Greater-Kumasi and Obuasi areas.

A total of 146,000 people are expected to be inoculated in the Ashanti region in the first phase of the exercise, following the delivery of 200,000 doses of the vaccine.

At the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), the Mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi, representing the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, was vaccinated by the COVID-19 Health team.

Members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and heads of department of the RCC also received their vaccination.

Also among the first recipients of the dose were;  Prof. Rev. Emmanuel Asante, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Dr. Oheneba Owusu Danso, CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital  and Dr. Emmanuel Koranteng, Regional Director of Health Services, government functionaries and party activists.

The KMA boss stressed that the vaccine is safe and encouraged the public to patronise it to achieve the desired result of containing the coronavirus.

Osei Assibey Antwi urged the public to take the vaccine without any hesitation to reciprocate the gesture of the President by acquiring the vaccines at no cost to Ghanaians.

From Mamponteng, Ernest Best Anane reports that staff of the Kwabre East district Assembly and Heads of institutions showed the way by taking the first COVID-19 vaccine to kick off the exercise in the Municipality.

Dr. Samuel Osei Somuah, Nana Osei Asibey Bonsu and Dr. Eric Nii Oku-Aryee, the Municipal Director of Health, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Medical Superintendent at Mamponteng Polyclinic respectively took their turns to take the first vaccine, before the other heads of institutions followed, at the launching of the new vaccine in the Municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive cautioned the management and staff of the Assembly to take the new COVID-19 vaccine serious and to encourage the residents to take part in the exercise. He also allayed the fears of the public saying there is nothing to fear about the vaccination.

Nana Osei Asibey Bonsu entreated all residents in the Municipality in particular and Ghanaians in general to take the vaccine without any fear or doubt, especially when all the political leaders, including most of the stakeholders and traditional leaders, have shown the way.

According to him, the government would not do anything untoward to negatively impact the lives of the citizens.

The MCE commended the government for the proactive approach in the fighting against the coronavirus.

The Municipal Health Director, Dr. Osei Somuah charged all health workers at the various health facilities in the municipality to take the vaccine to assure their staff that there is nothing to be scared of about the exercise.
