Ogbame Selby denies masterminding Afeku’s defeat
Ogbame Selby, who was disqualified from contesting the Evalue-Gwira parliamentary primary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has denied ever campaigning against the candidature of Madam Catherine Afeku, who lost the seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Kofi Arko Nokoe, 35, by an over 2,000 vote margin.
The constituency executives of the party, at a news conference at Axim, accused Mr Obgame and other party bigwigs in the constituency of being traitors who also masterminded the defeat of Afeku.
The Deputy Constituency Secretary, James Kainyah, who addressed the conference, said: “We have credible information that some of the traitors are in Accra claiming to have worked for Nana Addo so they should be given position.”
But, in a telephone interview with The Chronicle, Ogbame Selby denied ever campaigning against Afeku.
According to Ogbame, after he was denied the chance to contest the primary, he personally called Madam Afeku to inform her about his intention to join her campaign, but he (Ogbame) was rejected.
“I am not surprised that they are accusing me of masterminding her (Afeku) defeat,” he said, adding that some people think he would re-surface in 2024 to contest the primary, hence, he must be destroyed now.
Ogbame told this reporter that it was suicidal to have prevented him from joining the campaign, because the NPP has been getting substantial votes from the area he hails from (Gwira). According to him, an analysis of the polling stations results indicate that candidate Afeku lost heavily in the Gwira areas, which is an indication that the Gwira people were not enthused with the works of the MP.
