Medeama’s Prince Agyemang reveals why he left South Africa

April 29, 2021 By 0 Comments

Medeama SC striker Prince Opoku Agyemang has disclosed why his stint with South African Premier League side Cape Town City FC was cut short.

Agyemang joined City in June last year on a one-year loan deal with an option to sign him on a permanent deal until 2024.

The 28-year-old, however, failed to make an impact in South African football and his stay in Cape Town was cut short to only six months.

Reports from the Rainbow nation indicated that the Citizens were not convinced of the Ghanaian’s display hence replaced him with new signing, Zambian striker Justin Shonga.

However, Agyemang has given a different dimension to the report, claiming he left the club because of the rules in the South African championship that does not permit more than five foreigners to play for a club at the same time.

“Cape Town city was 10th on the South African league table so they were seeking to strengthen their attacking machinery and they came for me to propel them onto the league ladder,” Agyemang stated.

“When I went there, I was playing very well but they were having a striker from Zambia whose papers weren’t ready and that was why they came for me.

“Unfortunately, according to South Africa rules, every club has the right to use five foreign-based players so when the Zambian striker got ready, one of the foreigners had to be sacrificed, so I was used because my loan deal had expired.”

Agyemang is back to scoring duty – hitting four goals in six matches since returning from South Africa.

His latest victim was Asante Kotoko when he scored an instinctive equalizer in their 2-1 victory against the Porcupine Warriors at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium last weekend.
