I understand if my daughter, Olympia Lightning, doesn’t follow athletics

Usain Bolt has said he would never push his newborn daughter, the wonderfully named Olympia Lightning, into following the trail he blazed in the world of athletics.

Usain Bolt’s daughter

Bolt, who is one of track and field’s all-time legends with eight Olympic gold medals to his name, introduced his daughter to the world last week after his partner, Kasi Bennett, gave birth to her in May.

Speaking to Codelist, Bolt opened up on the first days of being a father and how, if she shows an interest in sport, he didn’t want to see her put under the pressure of his achievements.

‘I’ll try not to push her into athletics,’ the 33-year-old Bolt said. ‘It is not for everyone. Also, it will be more difficult for her, because she will be in comparison with me. But if she wants to do it, I’ll support her.

‘My goal has always been to be one of the greatest; to be the best model to follow. For me, being a father is new, but in reality, I’m having fun and I’m learning with my daughter, just seeing her grow.’

Bolt’s legacy of eight Olympic gold medals stretch from the 2008 Beijing Games up to the 2016 event in Rio de Janeiro. He has held the 100m and 200m gold since 2008, and also has two 4x100m relay golds from London and Rio.

Bolt retired after the 2017 World Championships, where he finished third in the 100m and pulled up with a hamstring injury in the 4x100m.

He pursued a football career after the curtain fell on his days in athletics and made appearances for Norwegian side Stromsgodset and Australian team Central Coast Mariners.
