HealthAlert! Expired products on sale in Kumasi
The Environmental unit of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has warned residents of Kumasi and beyond against the purchase of unwholesome chicken on the market.
It has also urged the public to be wary about expiry dates on products they buy, as Christmas gets near.
The admonition from the KMA, follows the seizure of expired frozen chicken legs, which were on-sale at the Asafo market in the Kumasi metropolis.
The assembly has, therefore, issued a stern warning that anyone caught selling expired products would face the full rigours of the law.
The product, which originally sells at GHC1, 200 was ironically being sold at GHC600.00 at the said market.
In an interview with the head of the environmental unit at the KMA, Mr. Isaac Bassayin, he explained to The Chronicle that sometime last week they picked up information at Nkawie,Juaso in Ashanti Region and Atewa in the Eastern Region that some people were selling expired chicken.
Upon the receipt of this intelligence, Mr.Bassayin said the assembly deployed some officers to the said market to urge the women to desist from selling unwholesome chicken to the public, but the women denied selling such products.
They, however, later discovered that the women were not telling the truth after they sent an undercover to go and buy some of the products.
According to the environmental boss at the KMA, after they had evidence of the act, they sent a taskforce, including a military officer to the shop where the product was purchased, but the owner still denied the claim. The taskforce nevertheless arrested them and prepared them before court. The case has been adjourned to September 3.
