Bawumia won’t resign before contesting NPP flagbearer slot

The Vice President, Dr Mahammudu Bawumia, will not resign ahead of the presidential primary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Unlike other appointees of the Executive Arm of government who wish to vie for the flag bearer slot, Dr Bawumia is exempted by virtue of being the Vice President of the country.

The constitution of the NPP is explicit on that, as it does not mention the Vice President as part of those to lay down their ‘executive tools’ before filing to contest.

Article 13 (1) (6) says “any national officer, minister, deputy minister or MMDCE who file to contest to become presidential candidate of the party, shall resign his/her position.”

The presumptive  aspirants apart from the Vice President include the recently resigned minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, the minister for Foods and Agriculture, Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

Last night, the Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen handed over his resignation letter to Jubilee House, igniting speculations he is ready to contest and lead the NPP to the 2024 presidential elections.
