Australian based philanthropist builds 9 bedroom apartment for Tsledom Basic School

The Ghana Education Service Directorate in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region has received the keys to a nine bedroom apartment donated by an Evangelist and indigene of Krobo Odumase, Madam Mercy Tettey of the Assemblies of God Church, Dansoman branch, who single-handedly sponsored the construction for staff and teachers at the Tsledom Basic School.

She further donated a 55-inches television to the school to promote the evangelism of the gospel of early life of Jesus Christ during their usual Wednesday routine worship.

This marked the second gesture she has made after co-sponsoring the drilling of a mechanised borehole for the school.

It could be recalled that Madam Tettey, in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on Thursday October 10, 2019, donated a polytank as well commissioned a GH¢17,000 mechanised borehole for the people of Tsledom and its Basic School.

Touching on what was behind the gesture, Madam Mercy Tettey stated that her motivation was stimulated by Isaiah chapter 6 verse 8, which states: “Then I heard the Lord asking, ‘Whom should I send as a messenger to these people? Who will go for us?’ I said, “Here I am. Send me.”

This, she mentioned, had been her motivation to give back to communities, not necessarily where she hails from, but where the spirit directs her.

Without forcing any individual, she was quick to call on similar minded people to adopt needy individuals to support their welfare needs, including education and health, since the government would not be able to do everything.

The Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Samuel Kwesi Tettey, stated that, like a brilliant child who goes to school in tattered clothes unnoticed, the Tsredom Municipal Assembly Basic School’s academic performance has not been recognised as it suffers many infrastructure deficits.

According to him, the Tsredom Municipal Assembly Basic School had recorded consistently 100 per cent academic performance since 2016, setting a record Best Public Basic School in the 2019 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with aggregate 13.

Notwithstanding that, some teachers had to cover long distances from the Akosombo township to deliver lessons at the Tseredom Basic School every day, whilst the few who lived in the community share and slept in the school’s Library and administration office.

According to the Ghana Education Service, a single stream basic school with Junior High attached must have a minimum of 14 teachers, including the Headteacher, but the Tsredom Municipal Assembly Basic School could now boast of five, including a female staff, following a teacher exodus that hit the school in 2020.

Mr. Samuel Kwesi Tettey has given the assurance that his outfit was currently working to redirect some teachers in some over-staffed schools in the urban part of the Municipality to the deprived schools.

On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Mr. Simon Kweku Tetteh, tasked the Education Director to draft a rural teacher motivation plan on the funding of the Assembly to lure teachers to accept posting to the school.

Mr. Simon Tetteh announced he was going to give each of the 110 pupils a school uniform, asking the headmaster to pick them up from the office of the Municipal Education Director.
