The United States has extradited Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu to Ghana to serve a 10-year prison sentence, marking the first extradition between the two countries since 2009.

Tamakloe-Attionu, former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), was convicted in April 2024 and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour on multiple charges including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy, money laundering, and procurement breaches.

The offences, committed between 2013 and 2016, involved the misappropriation of more than GH₵25.6 million — approximately $6 million — in Ghanaian taxpayer funds through multiple criminal schemes.

She left Ghana after requesting court permission for a medical check-up abroad in 2019 and never returned to face trial. Ghana’s courts proceeded without her, convicting her in absentia.

Acting on a formal extradition request submitted in July 2024, U.S. Marshals arrested Tamakloe-Attionu and placed her in detention. A U.S. District Court in Nevada subsequently ruled that the extradition treaty between the two countries remained valid and enforceable, and certified her return to Ghana.

The U.S. Embassy confirmed the transfer, calling it a demonstration of the “strong U.S.-Ghana law enforcement partnership” and a shared commitment to accountability.

She is now in Ghanaian custody, where her sentence awaits.
