Zambian slams FIFA rankings
Football Association Zambia president Kalusha Bwalya has taken a dig at the latest FIFA ranking claiming it is unimportant to football.
The African champions were ranked 41st in the world and 6th on the continent in the July ranking but the former PSV Eindhoven forward believes that is not a true reflection of the country’s strength.
The 1988 African Footballer of the Year believes the Chipolopolo should be Africa’s number one national team.
Bwalya wrote on his official twitter page: “Rankings have never been important to us. Many a highly ranked teams have lost to lowly ranked ones.
”Ranking certainly does not indicate strength. Too much focus on rankings can give countries false sense of confidence. Zambia should be ranked number one in Africa, we’re African Champions after all.”
Zambia lost to Sudan but recovered to beat Ghana 1-0 in last month’s Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
