Trader Sentenced 20yrs For Robbery

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a trader to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbing from a military barracks.

The convict, Kwabena Boateng, broke into the house of the complainant, who resided in the Neghelli barracks at 37 in Accra.

He threatened the complainant with a knife and succeeded in taking a Toshiba laptop and Ipad, with a total value of GH¢3,500 and a sum of GH¢130. He was arrested by neighbours when he was trying to scale the wall and was taken to the police station.

He was charged with unlawful entry contrary to section 152 of Act 29/60, robbery contrary to section 149 of Act 29/60 and causing damage contrary to section 172 of act 29/60.

He pleaded guilty to all the charges levelled against him before the court, presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri. The court sentence him to five years on the first and third counts and 20 years on the second counts, all to be served con-currently.

The facts of the case before the court was is that on February 9, 2013, at about 9:30 am, Boateng went to Neghelli barracks at 37 and entered the complainant’s room.

The Prosecutor, DSP Patrick A. Mokeh told the court that Boateng threatened to stab the complainant with a knife if she shouts.

He said Boateng took a Toshiba laptop and Ipad all valued at GH¢3,500.00 and a cash sum of GH¢130.00 and $1 from the complainant’s room.

According to the prosecutor, Boateng, after taking the items, took to his heels and tried to scale a wall, but was pulled down by the complainant.

DSP Mokeh further told the court that Boateng used the laptop to hit complainant’s head in an attempt to escape, but was arrested by neighbours and handed over to the police.

He told the court that the items were retrieved from him, including the money, adding that Boateng admitted the offence in his caution statement.
