The Offinso street killing…

They were enraged by the senseless killing of one of their own on the road right in front of the town. When they decided to make their feelings known, the police descended on them.

One of their own, who was knocked down by a taxi on the street, had died, and the youth of Saboa, a suburb of Offinso in the Ashanti Region, decided that enough was enough.  The aggrieved youth of the vibrant community decided to protest against reckless driving on the streets of the municipality.

Unfortunately, anger took the better part of them. They blocked roads leading to and leaving Offinso in their desperate attempt to draw attention to the plight. To contain the situation, the District Police Command asked for reinforcement from the regional capital, Kumasi.

Instead of containing the situation professionally, the police went on a shooting spree. Three demonstrators sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Hospital, where one died.

The Chronicle views this development disturbing enough to demand a full scale enquiry. We are disappointed that after several instances of police personnel shooting to kill in their overzealous attempt to contain a rampaging crowd rather go to worsen the situation.

We are not riot experts, but The Chronicle is of the view that you do not stop riotous behaviour by shooting to kill. Throughout
