Spectacular performance at Accra open

A spectacular performance by Vincent Coffie and Grace ‘Tico’ Afriyie handed them the ultimate in the 61st edition of the Accra Open tourney at the Achimota Golf Club last Saturday. The duo, apart from the glittering trophies they picked, also received return tickets to South Africa.

The high profile tourney attracted golfers from Togo, Gabon, Nigeria, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Liberia.
Coffie grossed 153, over two days in the men’s gross edition, while  Afriyie finished first in the lady’s gross category with 171 net .
Y. Dogbe, 154, J. Amaglo, I57, Jessica Tei, 173, Beatrice Vetsch-Bempong, 177, placed second and third in the men’s and lady’s category respectively.
The men’s net saw  E.S. Oddoye emerging tops after returning a 147 net in the Net edition, with  P. Gyasi, 149, and A. Dand, 150, following in that order.
M. Sampeney-Ganbrah, after recording an impressive 145 net over two days, grabbed the ultimate  in the lady’s net event, while Clara Price, 152, and Royal Club’s MI Oppong, 153, placed second and third respectively.
P. Tender won the youth best gross with a gross of 82, he received a GH¢500 cash prize for his effort,
while Bright Logo, 87, trailed.
Evergreen Emos Korblah stood tall in the pros category  after a 280 score over  four days, and for his efforts, he run home with a mouthwatering GH¢10,000 Cedis, while Godwin Sai, 285, Kodjo  T.K.,  287,
followed in that order.
The high profile E. Opoku picked the men’s longest drIve prize, while E. Aku Yaba won the lady’s event. The men’s closest to the pin went to P. Gyasi, while MI Oppong grabbed the lady’s event.
Club captain Rene Kwame-Gameli made a passionate appeal to golfers, saying “my appeal to you is to avidly support your various clubs to enable them upgrade their existing facilities.
“As a nation, we must not be left behind in the development of the sport. The time has come for us to
overcome the dependency on nature alone, as a way of keeping our course green all year round,” he added.
He revealed that  Achimota Golf Club  has taken some new initiatives aimed at  increasing its internally generated funds to support the development of the club.
Captain Kwadjo A.  Butah (Rtd), president of the club commended the organizers  for putting together
the well patronized  event,  and the golfers who traveled from far and near to grace the occasion.
