One of Ghana’s female hockey sides, Extinguishers, came close to lifting its first silverware at club level but lost 2-3 to Nigeria’s Heartland in the female’s grand finale at the National Hockey Stadium last Saturday.
The Ghanaians took charge in most part of the game leading 2-1 at a point in time, but complacency crept into their game and allowed the Nigerians to assume the driving seat.
It was Yobe Desert Queens who won the third place after beating Ghana’s Reformers on penalties for the third place.
Tournament favourites, Trustees suffered the same fate. They lost 1-4 to defending champions Sharkia of Egypt.
The Ghanaians impressive performance in the 10-day hockey fiesta endeared them to the students of the game but failed to live up to expectation in the last game after drawing 3-3 with the same side at the Group stage.
Another Egyptian side, Police, beat Strathmore of Kenya 3-1 to pick bronze, while Golden Sticks won 4-3 against Nigeria’s Niger Flickers in the fifth and sixth place game.
