Some workers and residents behind the Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC) at Kokomlemle, a suburb of Accra, have turned part of the street into rubbish a dump.
The Accra File visited the place and spoke to some residents, who disclosed that the entire area does not have any rubbish containers like other suburbs.
A resident, who only gave his name as Yaw, blamed the situation on traders in the area, and in particular, fitting mechanic shops.
“They throw the debris they produce after working on vehicles, and burn them there in the evenings, leaving the ashes unattended to,” he added.
According to him, even the wall, where the rubbish is dumped and burnt is getting weak, and has developed cracks.
Another issue the file found was that waste was also being dumped in the drains nearby, thus chocking them, and preventing the free flow of water in the gutters in the area.
The situation could also pose health problems for the people if not checked, as some residents have turned the gutters into places of convenience, making the whole place stink badly.
Yaw also said, he thinks the situation could partly be blamed on Zoomlion Company Limited, which has refused them rubbish bins.
He said the company had insisted each household pay an amount of GH¢10, before they give them rubbish bins.
He lamented that this situation was forcing the residents to dump and burn their refuse on the streets.
Another thing the file also realised was that the entire area did not have even have a rubbish container, which is normally placed by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in every community and area.
The file would however, want to appeal to the government and the AMA to intervene in the situation, and provide rubbish containers.
