The Mayor of Accra and also Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has appealed to the general public, especially residents of the city, to be disciplined in the way and manner they handle waste during the festive season.

According to the Mayor, lot of dirt is generated during festive seasons, and the sad aspect of the story is that people indiscriminately dispose it at open places not meant for such purposes.

The Mayor was speaking at a ceremony where Zoomlion Ghana Limited donated 200 litter bins, worth GH¢20,000, to the AMA in Accra on Tuesday.

Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije said poor sanitation in the city had been the concern of many, especially, the assembly, and that there was a need to put the city in order.

He noted that some people dump litter indiscriminately, with the view that there were no litter bins to serve that purpose, and turn round to accuse the AMA of not living up to its obligations.

Thus, he said, the time had come for the people and the assembly to take control of the sanitation situation in the metropolis, to ensure that the city is kept clean during the festive season.

He, however, charged the public to be watchful over the litter bins, and not to convert them into domestic waste bins, since they were not meant for that purpose.

He urged people to put the litter bins into good use, and warned that the assembly would arrest and prosecute anyone found stealing the bins, or dumping domestic waste in them.
