Police apprehend two car snatcher

THE POLICE Patrol team at Asokwa in Kumasi has apprehended two armed robbers who engaged in a series of armed robbery activities in the Kumasi Metropolis.
Sulemana Issifu 35, and Kwadwo Amoani, 25, were arrested on September 6, 2012, upon a tip-off by a Good Samaritan, according to the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyening.
He disclosed at a press briefing in Kumasi yesterday that the two miscreants were among four others, two of whom are on the run. According to DCOP Gyenning, the two suspects are ex-convicts and that Kwadwo Amoani is standing trial at a High court.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander indicated that the thugs ply their activities around Asokwa and its environs between the hours of 11: 00 pm and 4:00 am and have robbed quite a number of taxi drivers who operate in the area.
He said these criminals hire taxis in the night especially around 11:00 pm and in course of the journey, they snatch the cars from the drivers and use them to rob taxi drivers and other passengers and thereafter abandon the car.
DCOP Gyenning said on August 11, 2012, the car snatching syndicate attacked a KIA Spectra taxi cab with registration No. AS 7379-12 from the driver amid firing and used the same car to rob the occupant of a KIA Avera taxi cab with registration No. AS 6773 Z.
The police chief said upon a tip-off, the Asokwa Police mounted a search which led to the arrest of the two suspects in their hideouts.
A search in their premises revealed one video camera, two internet modem, 22 assorted mobile phones, eight empty laptops bags, one printer, four pen drives and a handful of store shirts.
The police have mounted a search for one of the suspects, who is named in the robbery as Dacosta but currently on the run while the two arrested suspects have been remanded in Police custody to assist in investigations.
The Police Commander urged the public including taxi drivers, to be extra vigilant and co-operate with the police for the arrest of criminals who are terrorizing residents.
He emphasized that modern Policing is a collective responsibility of the police and the citizenry. The police, boss, however, bemoaned the situation where these miscreants are granted bail when they appear before the courts, saying they come out unchanged and attack innocent members of the public
