Nobody in NDC can contest Mills and win – Nii Lantey

Aide to President John Atta Mills, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije has stated unequivocally that nobody in the ruling party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), can contest President Mills in a Presidential primary and win.

He said due to the enviable achievement chalked by President Mills in his two years in office, anybody who attempts to contest him (President Mills) “will amount to a waste of time and resources”.

His comments come in the wake of a renewed campaign for former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to contest President Mills in the presidential primaries of the NDC ahead of election 2012.

On Monday, December 6, 2010, reports emerged that Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, FONKAR – a political pressure group championing the purported presidential ambition of the former First Lady had launched a new website to propel Mrs Rawlings’ Presidential ambition for 2012.

According to reports, the website – www.fonkar-org which is currently active, has a bold caption “Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR)” with pictures of Mrs. Rawlings, costumed in yellowish African Kaba and a scarf calmly holding her waist beaming an attractive smile.

In June this year, the presidential ambition of Mrs. Rawlings was publicly displayed in Tamale at a rally to climax this year’s June 4 uprising celebration.

Members of the Ashanti Regional branch of the June 4 Movement, wearing freshly printed T-Shirts and other paraphernalia, boldly displayed a banner with the inscription “Movement for Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings 2012 President”.

Recently, campaign posters of Nana Konadu were also splashed across town by some unknown persons.

The former First Lady has however not publicly announced her intention to contest President Mills to lead the NDC for 2012 elections.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on December 6, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije said President Mills is not scared of anybody who competes against him.

He said unless President Mills decides not to contest the presidential primaries, his achievements are enough to convince the electorate to give him the nod to lead the party for the 2012 elections.

According to Nii Lantey, only Kwame Nkrumah’s achievement can surpass that of President Mills.

“No government has achieved this level of development in two years except Kwame Nkrumah,” he declared.

Meanwhile, a staunch member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Kobina Arthur Kennedy says while the ongoing developments in the NDC are worrying, the achievements being trumpeted by NDC members is nothing but a mirage.

He said the Mills government has failed to fulfil many of its campaign promises, adding that the President’s declaration of 2011 being an action year is evidence that his government has woefully failed in its first two years.

Dr Arthur Kennedy, who has declared his intention to contest parliamentary seat of Abura Asebu Kwamankese constituency, urged the former first lady to publicly declare her intentions to put the issue to rest.
