Newmont Akyem Project Lectures Journalists On Mine-Pit Blasting

Newmont Akyem Project has organised a workshop on mine-pit blasting for journalists in the Eastern Region.

The workshop, which was organised by Savannah Communications and facilitated by Newmont, brought together top officials from major organisations that have oversight responsibilities in the mining sector.

Officials from the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Building and Roads Research Institute (BRRI) were represented at the programme, which was under the theme “Developing our People in Pursuit of Excellence.”

In his welcome address, the External Relations Manager of Newmont, Mr. Oduro-Kwarteng, said in ensuring proper and good mining practices, the role of the media cannot be underestimated.

That, and other reasons, he said, motivated Newmont, in collaboration with Savannah Communications, to organise the programme, since the success of the Akyem Project, by and large, had been on the shoulders of the media.

According to the External Relations Manager, the workshop was most appropriate, since it would empower media practitioners in the region with the needed skills and materials for effective reportage.

Media practitioners were taken through topics such as “Mineral laws” by a senior legal officer from the Minerals Commission, the “Role of EPA and Operations” by the Eastern Regional Director of the EPA, Mr. Felix Addo-Okyireh, and “Building structure on mining activities” by Dr. Charles Akayoli of the BRRI.
