Navy arrests illegal canoes operating in Ghanaian waters

The Ghana Armed Forces has announced the arrest of a number of canoes engaged in illegal fishing along Ghana’s coastline, between 26 and 30 December, 2010.

A statement signed by Lt. Commander M.A Larbi said over the period, 18 canoes which were using generator sets and light bulbs while fishing in the country’s waters, thereby violating the fisheries laws, were arrested.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Class Boat Philemon Quaye, made six arrests along the Tema coast during anchorage patrols, while CNS Class Boats Kevin Dzang and Joy Amedume made 12 arrests during patrols along the western coast.

The generator sets, light bulbs, and other seized equipment have been handed over to the Department of Fisheries.

The Ghana Navy would meanwhile, intensify routine patrols to arrest and deter the recalcitrant fishermen from the continuous violation of the laws of Ghana.
