THE POLICE in Bawku, on Wednesday, fired warning shots to disperse some Kusasi youth who stormed the Magistrate’s Court premises to protest against the release of one Abdul Rahaman Sulemana Folli, for circulating a document challenging the legitimacy of the Overlord of the Bawku Traditional Area, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

The controversial document was addressed to the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), and copied to the police, National Security and some media houses, including the Ghana News Agency.

The Upper East Regional Police Commander, (ACP)/Mr. Bright Oduro, told this paper that Folli was arrested for the publication of false news, and causing fear and panic.

The Police Commander said when Folli made his second appearance in court on Wednesday and was granted bail, Kusasi youth were angered, and therefore wanted to demonstrate at the court premises. The police intervened, and fired warning shots to calm the situation.

On a private car that was burnt Mr. Odoru said this happened outside the court premises. No arrest was made.

His explanation diffused earlier suggestions that the Kusasi youth were the ones who shot sporadically around the court premises and burnt down the car to protest against the granting of Folli bail.
