KANTON SHS MARKS 40TH ANNIVERSARY

THE KANTON SENIOR High school in the Sissala East of Upper West Region has marked its 40th anniversary celebration under the theme: “Quality Education in Senior High School, a pre-requisite for Unity, Peace and Development”.
The headmaster, Mr. Juasuglo Johnson Saborh, said the school, which was established in 1972 as a Training College has helped in transforming the social and economic lives of the people as teacher Trainees of the college, created an impact in their lives by making schooling an exciting experience.
He said the school would now need additional dormitory space to house the current student population of approximately 1,500.
Mr. Saborh has expressed gratitude to the government for providing the school with infrastructure and mentioned the rehabilitation of a dining hall, a 2-storey dormitory block for girls and the Science Resource Center which has been completed and handed over.
He appealed to the government to consider prioritizing the rehabilitation of dormitories and staff bungalows to attract more teaching staff.
Headmaster Saborh was also grateful to the PTA for the erection of the school fence wall and the schools’ Water Improvement project.
The Upper West Regional Minister, Amin Amidu Sulemani assured the school that the government will not renege on its promises to the people and that Kanton SHS will have its fair share.
Sulemani stated that the NDC was committed to investing in education at all levels, improve and expand opportunities in all sectors of the economy, deal with unemployment and create the congenial atmosphere to encourage local private sector investment.
He mentioned government’s policy of extending second cycle education to the rural and some urban areas under which 200 community Senior High School will be established in the coming years and said two new Senior High Schools at Gwollu and Funsi will admit their first batch of students this year.
The Regional Minister said government in the education sector has awarded over three hundred contracts in the region since 2009, with over 60% of them completed and being utilized.
The District Chief Executive for Sissala East, Madam Sulemana Alijata said as a result of the government’s commitment to promoting the study of Science and Mathematics a one-Storey block has been renovated at Kanton Senior High School to serve as a Science Resource Centre for the district whilst an old dining hall is being given a face-lift to uplift the Image of the school. Madam Sulemana said the District Assembly is also collaborating government efforts with the provision of a borehole and five Desktop computers to assist the school to alleviate life on campus and promote the study of ICT. The DCE pledged GH¢2,000.00 as her contribution towards the celebration of the 40 anniversary celebration.
