From Francis Owusu-Ansah, Wenchi
The Wenchi Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has approved GH¢12,522,475.06 as budget estimate for the 2020 financial year.
The Municipal Budget Analyst, Mr. Kudola Emmanuel, presented the budget to the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Seventh Assembly.
Mr Kudola said the estimated amount would cover five thematic areas, namely, management and administration, social service delivery, infrastructure delivery and management, economic development, and environmental and sanitation management.
Towards achieving the 2020 target, he said the assembly was expected to mobilise funds from the District Assembly Common Fund, District Development Fund, and World Bank among others.
The outgoing Assembly Member for Boadan Electoral Area in the Wenchi Municipality, Idris Mahama, proposed that commercial motorcyclists, also known as Okada riders, in the Municipality should be given unique numbers for easy identification.
Mahama said that the registration was necessary for proper identification, especially when they break traffic regulations or engage in crime.
He said either the Wenchi Municipal Assembly or the Wenchi Okada Association should provide the operators with vests designed by the unions with their names and numbers.
He also proposed to the assembly that when the vests are numbered, there should also be emergency numbers to call in case a passenger has a problem with any commercial motorcycle operator.
The outgoing assembly member further suggested that the riders should be trained on road safety measures, in order to reduce the increasing number of road accidents involving these tricycle riders in the Municipality.
