The management of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has donated an amount of US$200,000 to the Obuasi Community Trust Fund for the construction of a multi-purpose Maternity Unit for the Obuasi Government Hospital.
The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Eric Asubonteng, while presenting the cheque covering the amount, noted that one of the major values of AngloGold Ashanti was to ensure that societies in which it operates are better off, hence, the setting up of the Trust Fund to execute projects and offer interventions to improve the lives of the people in the mine’s catchment area.
According to Mr. Asubonteng, the company is currently doing construction and will go into production by the end of the year, and pour first gold in December.
“The Trust Fund should be supported with interim funding before gold pour to ensure it continues to deliver on its mandate of engendering socio-economic development, hence, we have doled out this amount for the construction of a magnificent maternity unit for the people,” he said.
The AGA MD stressed that by giving out the money, even before production starts, demonstrates the commitment of the company towards the welfare of the people of Obuasi in particular, and Adansi in general.
Nana Kwabena Ponkoh, Kunkahene and Trust Fund Board Member who received the cheque on behalf of the Trust Fund Board Chairman and Adansiman, expressed his appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti for the gesture.
He appealed to the entire Obuasi population to rally behind the company in its effort to bring improvement to every part of the township.
“The new AngloGold Ashanti is less than one year old, but over 600 youth have been employed,” the Kunka chief noted, and called for support for AGA in its operations and ensure that more people from the area are employed.
