From Isaac Akwetey-Okunor, Ashaiman-Jericho
Punishment is one of the ways to correct erring children, but the decision of the man who has only been described as Obuor to melt black polythene and put the droppings on the body of his own children for taking his GH¢5 has baffled the people of Jericho, a suburb of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the information pieced to gather by this reporter, Obuor is fond of punishing his children aged 11 and 12 in a ‘military way’. The paper was told that Obuor, who is a popular shoe maker in the area, sometimes forces the children to lift five-inch cement blocks among others as a means of punishment.
According to the residents, they have always witnessed Obuor giving the children the ‘military’ training, but this time round, the training went beyond the norm.
Madam Catherine Boateng, one of the residents who spoke to The Chronicle in an exclusive interview, said she saw the children with many wounds on their bodies, and when she asked them the cause, they mentioned the name of their father.
According to Catherine Boateng, the children told her that they took GH¢5 of their father’s money to buy food when they were very hungry, but he did not take kindly to that because he had earlier cooked for them, therefore, subjected them to severe beatings for some minutes.
As if this was not enough, the aggrieved father went for a black polythene bag, melted it and dropped it bit by bit on their bodies.
Madam Boateng and some other residents of the area reported the issue to the authorities of the school the children attend.
The school authorities, together with the neighbours of the children, then went and reported the matter to the Ashaiman Police.
Another resident, who pleaded to speak on the condition of anonymity, stressed: “This is not the first time this Obuor guy has been torturing his children.” He continued: “Obuor sometimes make them raise their hands up with a cement block placed in their palms. He also starves the children after all these military training. We are scared of him killing the children in the future.”
Obuor is currently at large upon hearing that the matter had been reported to the police
The police confirmed the case to The Chronicle and said they were looking for the suspect to arrest him.
